I remember. I was 11 back then. In Poland we were given this Lugol’s solution to drink, it was horrible. Leukemia got me 20 years later.

They really told the fire fighters “The roof is on fire” when a reactor has exploded and blown the entire roof off…. Those poor fire fighters didn’t stand a chance when they showed up

One account I read (voices from Chernobyl) mentioned those first responder crews were a mix of brave men who knew they were going to certain death, and others who had no idea what radiation was and believed the gas masks would protect them.

It is not true that 4000 people have died as result of radiation. 4000 was a rough estimate, but further research naarowed it down to less than 200.
