“A rare Asian elephant calf has been born at Blackpool Zoo after a pregnancy that lasted almost two years.”

I had to double-check because it’s not mentioned in the article, and not something I thought about before – that elephants do indeed have the longest gestational period out of all land animals.

Calf is currently not suckling from mum, but mum is caring for the calf and the calf is actively letting the keepers know when it wants a feed. Hopefully all goes well – Blackpool had 2 calves in recent years that tragically both passed away

I’ll give it two years before it dies of elephant endotheliotropic herpesvirus. This whole thing of breeding elephants in zoos to ‘conserve’ them is complete bollocks.
