I was never a Labour member, so I don’t count, but honestly, I (on their behalf) didn’t want him leading the party into the last one.
If ever there was a time to feel vindicated…
you can tell its Conference season the media is full of Polls showing doom, disaster and the end of all things. Breathless reporting on leadership challenges from people that aren’t even MP’s Unions threatening to flounce out (they won’t they are just after something). Its all great fun and of course its four years to the next GE anything can happen in that time.
It’s worth looking at this through the lense of internal party politics, as well as the governments performance.
Starmer was selected as leader on a campaign which promised to unite both the left and right elements of the party and to carry over much of the previous Corbyn manifesto. Since becoming leader he has actually overseen a massive cull of left leaning members, reduced their ability to input. They have run an extremely undemocratic approach to selections etc to prevent left leaning members getting positions within the party. An example of this is the recent rushed deputy leader contest, designed to minimize any actual discussion or input from members.
This approach led by Morgan Mcsweeney has left members very isolated and frustrated and resulted in little good will with the current issues going on in the Government now
Then they shouldn’t have elected him leader before the last election, the constant infighting of political parties is ridiculous!
I’m not surprised, seems there’s a controversy every other week at the moment.
It wouldn’t surprise me if they use Starmer as as a sacrifice to push anything that could be unpopular, then axe him and prop up someone else before election to try garner some goodwill
Its a bit of an open secret in political circles that Starmer is a non-entity politically. He’s just the glove puppet. A less charming and transparent meat glove one would be hard pressed to find, but such is the contempt of the elites for us these days..
It’s a reasonable stance, much of Starmer’s time in office hadn’t been nearly as negative as the media portrays it but He has connoted with a surfeit of negative opinions. I still remember the communist meme panels which made quips such as “Kier Stalin, Marx Starmer, Kim Jong Starmer” etc. In truth, if labour wants to win the next election or atleast preserve their relevance in the next 8 years of political history, they will need a new face for their politics.
I don’t detest Kier Starmer, he’s managed a lot of problems well, but the reception he’s getting is hard to turn around, sooner or later the MPs will make a hard decision with the aim of self-preservation.
Can we just focus on the now rather than this doom spiral of what may happen in ~3 years?
UK government life cycle:
Gets elected on a load of promises.
Breaks a load of promises.
Becomes universally unpopular.
Party turns on them.
New leader installed.
Back to step 1.
Why do we keep doing this?
The disaster of the last 15 years is on an unalterable path.
Farage will be elected and only when the vast majority see that he cannot solve the problems will they begin to rethink what needs to be done.
Another labour leader won’t solve anything. In fact it will make things worse.
Labour would be doing themselves a favour by ousting Starmer now, ASAP, but even that act probably won’t save them. They’re done, finished, toast, at the next GE, and we all know who the UK Boss will be next…
