    1. Not in built-up areas, as I understand it, but outside those, apparently it’s fair game. (Most riders do allow cars to pass, but there’s always that one idiot)

Whats the problem? You have the whole left lane to overtake. Its enough space.

Legal as per the law. Makes it actually easier to overtake in larger groups. Otherwise you may have to cross a huge line

The [law explicitly allows it](https://gouvernement.lu/dam-assets/documents/actualites/2018/03-mars/conference-de-presse-modifications-du-code-de-la-route.pdf), so I am not sure what „rude“ and „cool“ are supposed to mean. It’s perfectly fine driving. In my experience as a car driver all I want is others to drive by the rules.

Besides, it’s a safety issue: a lot of drivers tend to not keep safe distances when passing. By taking up more space – even when riding alone – drivers tend to only pass in situations where it is perfectly safe to do so. They wait (as you say: it holds up traffic) until the situation and visibility is clear.

This makes it safer for everyone, but especially the cyclists, as they are the weaker element in this constellation.

But again: none of this matters. It‘s perfectly compliant with the traffic code, so it’s fine.

Edit: this post is now slowly getting flooded with people name-calling and wishing harm on others. If people are getting _this_ emotional about cyclists, I am not sure you have learned regulating your emotions properly. Maybe you can work on that. It will make you safer and better drivers, too.

I see absolutely no problem here, a tractor would hold you back exactly the same way but you would not post about it.

I usually take the opposite lane when passing cyclists, it is just more comfortable for them (I think it should be law, but that’s just a personal opinion).

They have to go to a single file when being overtaken, on top of hills, in bends, during dusk and dawn and when there are obstacles. Also they cannot impede traffic by doing so.

It’s a safety issue, I do the same with my girl. It’s enough one or two cars on your lifetime to not care and pass cm away from you for you to start doing this.

If you get triggered by cyclists pedaling peacefully in a wide road, maybe you are the problem.

You think your right to use the street is worth more than the cyclists right?

Ah yes,the Strava Weekend Championship is on again — sponsored by midlife crises and overpriced Lycra.

In this case I would have said that they could have made a bit more space. As far as I know, in towns they can ride next to each other, outside not. Don’t take my word for it though.

However I don’t quiet get what difference it makes.. just move to the left lane completely and give the biker enough space. If you can’t do that, it is just not safe to overtake.

Sure, we all want to get home faster, but I’ve never had to wait more than a minute or two behind cyclists. Small price to pay for not risking someone’s life. I often see people overtake before a corner, assuming that 99% of the time there is no oncoming traffic. And if they guess wrong, what happens? Is the reaction to hit an oncoming car at 90km/h, a tree, or a bike?
