Nicer article to wake up to than I’m accustomed to
This stuff is very obviously spoiling over and bubbling up online. It’s directly mimicking US and UK far right trends. It’s very sad to see and they’re literally turning into everything the country is normally very proud to stand against.
Irish nationalism normally doesn’t have that vibe of exclusion and ethnonationalism associated with fascists and xenophobic movements. We’ve never been supremacists and have a history of being the rebel against all of that stuff. The sense of identity has usually been very positive and outward looking and about both being and fighting for the underdog.
They don’t understand their own history or culture, or have even turned against it and have adopted someone else’s – they are just importing and localising MAGA, English extreme right politics and even far right loyalist bullshit and rebranding it in green white and orange. It’s rather disgusting and very disheartening to see. I’m just finding the whole thing depressing. It feels like my own sense of what it is to be Irish is under attack tbh. I don’t want to see this country being turned into some shitshow of MAGA driven politics.
People who are demonstrating counter protests to right wing protests need to fly the tri – colour flag as well . It’s very dangerous for a nation’s flag to be linked to one political view and not the other .
On TikTok, a while back, it became very clear that ANYONE using a tricolour in their username was trouble. But then a whole bunch of other Irish people just put the tricolour in their usernames, and now it’s lost that meaning.
It’s an easy thing to reclaim.
Feckin West Brits are using loyalist tactics in their war on immigration. Next they will be painting the council estate streets. I ain’t exactly happy with the pure robbery in the name of caring for ipas it’s blatant corruption on a thin moral viewpoint but cop on to yourselves with imitating the orange order of all organizations…..

Some of the tricolours in the city were looking especially sodden and manky this morning. I’d say they’ll be tatters before long!
Unregulated social media controlled and owned by oligarch billionaires and hostile states is a ridiculous thing to allow to continue.
All social media algo need to be fully auditable and open. No more black boxes of incitement to hate. Fox fucking news is taking over TikTok – fox is the cause of so much lies and hate it’s causing so much division
They are making it a issue where it’s no needed, just fly the Tri colour yourselves and it loses that polarised value
This stuff pales in importance to housing, climate collapse, corruption and inflation to people and it’s made with intent to divide and rule
There is no far right just normal everyday people standing up against the intolerant far left lunatics
The outrage against the arse holes flying the flag is exactly the reaction they were looking for.
Now it’s “the government hates the flag”.
It’s time the government brings in experts from the other countries which have seen similar issues.
We already have Justin Barrett trying to form a National Front type movement here. All that he needs is a handful of committed followers and violence is not too far off from that type of movement.
It’s time to take the far right seriously and designate them as what they are hate groups.
Maybe there needs to be another wave of Irish nationalism (traditionally more open and welcoming) to counter this “Irish nationalism” (foreign influences, racism, xenophobia, etc).
