The teacher stated a fact, there are people who view the flag as a racist symbol.
Had this been at my child’s school I would have been furious with the Schools leadership team and demanded that whoever made the final decision to act in such a spineless manner be removed.

What she actually said was “We are not saying that the England flag is an inherently racist symbol. However, unfortunately for some people it has been viewed to be that.” So what, exactly, is incorrect about that statement? I, for one, consider it to be a racist symbol – when it is being waved by racists as a symbol of their white englishness and hostility to brown-skinned foreigners..
It’s been co-opted by racists. Teacher is absolutely right.

It is being used as a racist/prejudicial symbol in some cases. Hence, there are negative connotations after you hear “NO Black in the Union Jack” etc.
There are also several videos across Social Media where a flag is placed outside a Mosque (but not outside a Church or anywhere nearby)… And the comments are somewhere between it being the biggest victory since D-Day or about as disgusting as you can imagine.
All the while, most Muslims there couldn’t care less or are simply bemused.
Simply hear it from the horses mouth if you want their motives. All pretty telling.
To borrow Labour’s phrasing, “rub their noses” in the flag until it’s normalised and loses any stigma. We’ve seen rainbow police cars and councils painting zebra crossings with various flags – normalise England’s flag in the same way. A simple policy mandating all taxpayer funded schools in England must fly it would be a simple start.

As usual the headline is BS.
My belief, my evidence is only anecdotal, is that there is way too much hard left politics in British schools. My history teacher was a great teacher, but she was an inch away from a communist, with all the animosity and bad faith against British history, culture and society that comes with it.
When I see interviews with the public, the norm is an association of British Culture as exceptional, in its avarice and crime, this is a lie, and its cultural suicide. This is a sickness born in schools. We were all taught about slavery, how many were taught about Britain’s unique role in abolishing it, how many were taught about the practically universal practise of slavery throughout time and space.
These parents objected rightly to this teacher’s preaching. Those parents might have been reacting on principle or instinct. I applaud them, and clearly the political currents are changing to a rejection of this collectivist, leftist, suicidal sickness.
Of course some people view our flag as racist. Did she mention that every flag of every nation is viewed as racist by someone, yet those nations fly it anyway. This preaching can be left to the prerogative of parents.
To those offended by this comment, I dont care, times are a changing. Schools will need to foster a collectivist pride in the country, or it will sink into the sea.

The teacher has no need to apologise, people are far too sensitive about their precious flag. If only they put that care into their community instead!

Reading the article, I don’t think there is anything wrong with what the teacher said. It sounds balanced and reasonable, with her being open about her own beliefs and involvement.
It doesn’t say what the ‘lesson’ was, but I suspect it was a tutor period, where discussion of local issues and current affairs is very much appropriate. It would not be appropriate in a maths lesson.
The people getting mad at the headline are not only the sort who use the flag to intimidate others but are also likely to be the kids who sat at the back of the class and never paid attention to the teacher. They will not read the article, do not have the critical thinking skills to consider the teacher’s point, and are proponents of anti-intellectualism too. It is not just about what the teacher said (and did not say), it is about the ideas of teachers and schools generally. They hate education and will protest that too.
If ‘some people view it that way’ Maybe ‘some people’ should hop on the next flight to another country.
That headline is disingenuous. He didn’t say it was a racist symbol. What he said was:

Which is true, because racists, nationalists, supremacists use their national identity as a weapon, and when you see them visibly on a march draped in the flag, it will get that association. The equivalent is a Muslim saying “Allahu Akhbar,” which translated to “God is Great” (ironically that latter is said by Christians to no offence). It’s used in multiple contexts, but because there’s incidences of Islamic fundamentalists and terrorists shouting it before they do something awful now has an association.
The flags being flown aren’t for some outpouring of local pride or welcoming. A lot of people don’t care the flags are even there. But the people who are putting them there are predominately from nationalist groups like Britain First and Patriotic Alternative. Groups which are racist.

There is nothing wrong or right with our national flags. They are just flags.
The far right fly their national flags in every country on earth, we are no different. Most people however are not far right, most people are good people and those flags represent them too.
The St George’s flag is, too often, used as a racist symbol. They are trying to do the same with the St Andrew’s flag. The flags themselves are just bit of cloth.
