Reform UK itself is not specifically a ‘racist’ group however it’s set up in a way and has policies that are very attractive to racists.
EDIT (for clarification) I’m merely remarking on the literature, policies and media output of Reform, which is very carefully curated to not be specifically ‘racist’. The organisation is 100% set up for, by and to attract racists. I’m simply separating the organisation from the people. I’d also characterise most of them as xenophobic rather than racist, they don’t care what colour you are, they just don’t like people who aren’t from the UK.

Racism is discrimination based on someone’s race or ethnicity. None of their policies or stances suggest they’re racist to me. Their immigration policies, for example, would discriminate equally against someone who is white and someone who isn’t white.

Kind of, whatever. Farage is a deeply unpleasant man who has been furthering his career based on his adorable “anti establishment” stance for so long I don’t even remember. That light plane accident over Ascot? That wasn’t ten years ago was it, I’m just old. I am going to give the guy the benefit of the doubt and say he’s an utterly shameless grifter who seeks nothing more than personal gratification (not always financial) from his career. All the rabble rousing divisive stuff is just to feed the media machine, he’s not actually that hateful, he just wants to get attention, the targets of his bigotry are mere collateral damage in the Nigel show.
That is the most charitable light I could paint him in. I didn’t make a single amphibian joke. Oh also reform are absolutely nothing without Nigel. Say he chokes to death on a pork scratching tomorrow (that would be on brand), who replaces him? Politics needs star power and regrettably Nigel has been blessed with just enough of that to make him relevant.

I’m so tired of them claiming that they are only concerned about “illegal” immigration when it’s evident that’s just not true. They want to end indefinite leave to remain, which involves deporting people who have lived and worked here legally for a long time. Illegal immigration is about 1% of immigration. Even saying “stop the boats” (which is an issue created by Brexit anyway) doesn’t fit that narrative as they are only “illegal” immigrants if they don’t get a successful asylum claim which 70% do

What I find interesting from the people defending Reform supporters and Reform here is that when Reform polls well, theres this rhetoric of “you can’t just ignore them and what they say, their concerns are legitimate.”
And yet when polling shows people are concerned about reform potentially being a racist party, its fine to ignore them, their concerns aren’t legitimate.
So when the public is positive towards Reform that’s legitimate but when theyre not it isn’t?

I want 0 illegal immigration with a flexible cap on non-EU migration, much like a lot of reform. Where we differ is I don’t think it’s the most pressing issue amidst Europe’s largest ongoing war for 80 years. When you see constant Russian propaganda being pushed by the figureheads of Reform, or ex leaders outright taking Russian bribes.. it’s hard to trust any of them. I’m willing to take my chances with SNP or Labour until Russia has lost it’s capacity to wage war. I voted yes in 2014 for Indy but I certainly wouldn’t again until the orcs have been pushed back to Mordor.

He was correct in calling the specific policy racist and they many people who vote reform are angry at the state of the country.
But it’s wild most of the voters hold Labour to blame when they’ve only just got into power and actively done more to reduce illegal immigration in 18 months than the Tories did in 14 years. But somehow Labour are a cancer on society and the worst..

This is the kind of people we are dealing with in the coming years leading up to the next election. Even people that i thought were generally quite nice are starting to show their true colours when it comes to other races and creeds.
It’s the silent racists and xenophobes that will win it for Reform, same with Brexit. It will be the people that walk into their local shops, restaurants, and other public places, all smiles and laughter, but in private, they are just as bad as the loud ones.

Virtual-Constant2785 on
Not on the surface, but the racism appears as soon as you examine the content. There’s a reason Reform support, like Brexit, is highest in areas with low levels of migration.
The boats are happening because the Tories closed all methods for claiming asylum in the Uk, decimated public sector workforce resulting in huge backlogs in asylum claim processing, and created the problem that Reform are cashing in on.
thehighyellowmoon on
Not everyone concerned with migration levels is racist, that’s obvious. But this is a party who has a leader and other figures that consistently say things which appeal to racists, attracts party candidates who have racist views, and invited a convicted criminal with known racist views to be a guest of honour at their party conference. If Reform UK PLC has any desire to prove to us that they’re not racist, then they make no effort to do so. Even if I felt no other party had my confidence, I would never vote Reform because of its appeal to racists and to me they have so far done nothing to demonstrate how they would build a better country for me and the next generation.
It’s a shame that the immigration situation has got to this stage where the concern is so high but so little appears to have been done, making a sensible discussion about it so difficult. Hence the appeal of a private company pretending to be a political party made up of fourth-rate Tories with no clear policies, they are the protest vote who can afford to run on easy soundbites. They so far haven’t yet failed where others have, and that will swing it for many. The only way I see them not getting power is if more of their councillors continue to resign and if the world is different once Trump goes before our next GE. Meanwhile Labour really really need to crack on with downstream investment to address the chronic underfunding in local communities.
