This just translates to ‘you didn’t vote the way we told you to because you didn’t understand it’. They had a three week campaign to articulate it and failed to do so and now that’s the electorates fault? As usual with Fine Gael the bang of arrogance and sense of entitlement is dripping off them.

Wasn’t the care referendum the biggest No vote in referendum history? Never before were we so united in a vote but obviously we didn’t understand what we were doing….

To be fair she’s not wrong.
And that’s her fault. She pushed for and overseen it.

Yes, it was the electorate’s fault. The politicians answer.

Ah ye, didn’t get what you wanted, so the general public are thick. That crowd from Fine Gael seem to have a genuine contempt for the Irish public.
I know that was wee Orange Order Heather, but I read the headline and imagined it coming out of Helen McIntee’s scowling mouth, as she lisped the words out. Her Scowling face is the embodiment of Fine Gaels contempt for the great unwashed. Should be the new party logo.

“When I look back now, I think perhaps there should’ve been more groundwork done. People didn’t understand what a durable relationship was.”
I didn’t understand why we voted to extend marriage rights to same-sex relationships in 2015, if we were only going to mix it all up with some vague entity that would be very expensive to argue in court.

In fairness, that headline is misleading (it’s the type of ‘misinformation’ that the Journal’s fact-checking team would go to town on were it someone they disagreed with). But Humphreys is extremely unwise not to distance herself from two referendums that were overwhelmingly defeated.

Yes voter here – people understood the referendums well enough. It was the Government who didnt understand their own constitutional amendments. People felt it was too vague and also were against removing the special recognition of motherhood from the constitution.
The leaked AG advice just before the referendum showed that people’s concerns were actually accurate and the Gov was lying through its teeth instead of admitting it made a mistake. See below:
‘Mr Fanning’s advice said that “in the absence of clear guidance within the constitutional text or by way of legislation, it is difficult to predict with certainty how the Irish courts would interpret the concept of ‘other durable relationships’.
“The courts may well address the question of what constitutes a ‘durable relationship’ on a case-by-case basis, having regard to the facts and circumstances of the particular case and the evidence before it.”
Mr Fanning said extending the definition of family to other durable relationships, as proposed, would be unlikely to have any particularly significant effect on immigration.
Care referendum proposals would have ‘real effects’, says AG in unpublished advice’
I would agree. We didn’t get the advice of the attorney general until the night before, and that was through a leak.
Heather was in the Government which didn’t explain it.

This woman’s husband was, & possibly still has ties, to the Orange Order. However, she claimed initially that she wasn’t aware of that, but then all of a sudden changes her tune & said he was. So basically she is a liar.

To be honest, if the referendum isn’t clear about what it’s asking, then voting to keep the current status quo is probably a better option.

Two hours I spent trying to figure it out.
I think they should have been two separate referendums.
I remember seeing a comedian the following week who summed it up perfectly “what was that last vote about? Something to do with giving wheelchairs to mothers”
