I assumed this was going to be a *slightly* harsh story of CC not knowing about the previous conviction. Maybe it had been decades previous etc. raising questions about her judgement.

But no. She was fresh out of prison on incredibly serious charges, CC knew all about it and tried to get the guards to give her an exemption.

Completely fucking insane. Why would she ever even do that. It’s nuts.

    2. caisdara on

What a spectacularly stupid thing to do. Why would you hire somebody from Éirigí, let alone one who had recently been trying to buy fucking guns?

    3. Sigh*

If the article is correct then it displays exceptionally poor judgment by Connolly. It’ll be interesting to see what her justification is for contesting it even after having been advised so by the Gardai.

Yeah, whatever. Tell me more about Jim Gavin and his drone.

From 2018. Had the woman served her time?

A lot of people wanted Gerry Adams as president over multiple Reddit threads over the last few months.

This is genuinely hilarious in light of a post from earlier today, and all the comments banging on about being a gaelgoir being the reason to vote for Connolly, and not having Irish being disqualifying for anyone else….

      > The Special Criminal Court heard that a search of the vehicle found two handguns and a stungun, as well as ammunition, cable ties, black pillow cases, canisters of petrol, wigs and disguises.

This is probably just me watching too much TV but the cable ties and black pillow cases are somehow even scarier and crazier than the guns.

      > She has a degree from Trinity College Dublin in early and modern Irish and a Masters in language planning from the University of Galway. When she was arrested, she was doing a PhD in new Irish language communities.

      > Since her release, she has built a successful career as an advocate for the Irish language and currently works for the Meath Gaeltacht. She appeared before an Oireachtas committee last year to speak about language planning in the Gaeltacht.

Sounds well qualified anyway! Maybe the other two should hire a few like her, then they’d be able to have a debate in Irish

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again

      What a fucking gobshite

Oh look another article smearing Catherine Connolly. They’re really digging deep at this stage. It’s kinda desperate

    11. miju-irl on

Jesus wept that is piss poor and very naive judgement , from the article

      >According to multiple sources, An Garda Siochána refused to grant the necessary clearance to allow Ní Shionnáin work in the buildings of the national parliament over security concerns.

      >Connolly contested the decision and wrote to authorities seeking to overturn it, but the decision was upheld.

      >Ní Shionnáin, who is also known as Shannon, served almost four-and-a-half years of her six-year sentence before she was released from prison in 2018, shortly before Connolly sought to hire her.

Interestingly there was a piece today on RTE radio 1 about how hard it is for released convicts to get hired. Mr Price was highlighted as hiring people with recent convictions, and how it’s enabling people to get back on their feet and integrate back into society successfully.

I heard the term ‘secondary punishment’ used, which actually made me rethink my initial reaction to the topic.

    13. Prize_Tadpole790 on

She’s a loose cannon and shows poor judgement. Seriously, trying to hire someone from Eirigi who has a criminal record 🙄

The hire was stopped by counter terrorism Gardai.

From 2018, 7 YEARS AGO. They’re really getting desperate for dirt on her

    15. Addictedtotat on

She’d be an embarrassment if she was elected President. What dreadful choices we have.

    16. IntrepidAstronaut863 on

One thing being an independent TD and another trying to go for the highest office.

There are levels to this. CC once again shows terrible judgement.

      Where are we now?

      – nominated Gemma Docherty
      – recently said German is reminiscent of nazi Germany (doesn’t see the resemblance of nazi germany to Russia again)
      – goes to Syria for a propaganda tour
      – co-signs letter with Clare Daly and Wallace after Assad tour and says she doubts the stories of France and uk regarding Syria (believe Russia version)
      – runs cover for Putin by shifting blame on nato for Ukraine.
      – still calls Ukraine “the Ukraine” bizarrely.

Feel like there is many more.

She genuinely has poor judgement and tbh the centre left parties have shown poor judgement backing her. We have an FF candidate and an FG candidate.

The centre left parties easily could’ve nominated France’s black or Ivana bacik etc and this would’ve made a four horse race.

I’ll find it hard to vote for Soc dems again and the more they run cover the more unserious they look.

Another smear article on CC , bloody journalists reporting all the extremely questionable stuff she done over the yrs

    18. JackDixonwithafatcok on

Catherine could fart in the other room and I’d hear about it, I’ve seen no criticism in comparison to the crap the papers publish of Catherine
“admin support”, what do the papers expect? and she failed the vetting process, such a non-story

    19. pippers87 on

Lads I don’t get all the uproar about her running for president. Unless she gets 45% or more of the first preference votes she hasn’t a hope. She could have really done with another anti establishment candiate for tramsfers..

    20. Who were they going to rob? And what’s an arms dealer doing in Offaly???

    21. shadybaby89 on

I don’t care. I’m honestly done with finna fail/gael at this stage. Housing crisis is a complete joke and nothing done. I’m voting for any alternative to them going forward

Support for Catherine Connolly among Sinn Féin voters up 1916%

    23. ConradMcduck on

Haven’t we had convicted criminals as TDs? Dessie Ellis was locked up for similar. He was a TD, how is this any worse?

    24. She’s dangerous. A walking political disaster waiting to happen.

    25. Lanzarote-Singer on

Not voting for this nut job even though her politics and views align with my own.

Voting for the pretty one with pearls and 20k handbag.

    26. TheSameButBetter on

Leaving aside what Catherine Connolly did, I’m actually quite heartened to learn that the Gardai can stop politicians from hiring people with questionable pasts and have them work in their Oireachtas.

    27. GalwayBogger on

Ah fuck off Ireland, you’re drunk. Now it’s a toss up between:
      – a cuckoo
      – a closet orangeman
      – a football manager

    28. rockyoudottxt on

She had served her time and CC asked for exemption to hire her. Gardai said no. I think they were pretty open about it? The woman is now language planning officer for meath, her salary paid via government funding. So seems like she’s turned things around.

If we don’t think people can be rehabilitated then we’re gonna need a lot more prisons because no one should be getting out then.
