This seems like a ridiculous claim, but maybe the article will clear things up.

“Our study suggests that high levels of particulate matter from stoves damage respiratory tissues, causing inflammation in a similar way to cigarette smoke.”

Yes. Yes it does. Damage to the lungs is caused in a similar way to cigarette smoke. The method by which damage occurs is the same, it is not causing “as much damage” as smoking.

You absolutely can not convince people that a pretty-looking fire is bad. Especially when you slap a “DEFRA approved” label on it

      People so innately love fire

Fuck off. They already took house coal away from me. Now, I need to use the bollocks that replaced it.

I don’t have wood burner stoves but I do have open fire places. The house is 140 years old. I can’t insulate it anymore than the attic has been and double glazing. I keep the heating at 12 celcius and use the fire places when it’s rather cold and now they don’t kick out the heat like they used to because of the fuel I have to use.

Just asking is this burning wood on an open fire or In a modern woodburning stove
And that the wood is at or below recommended dried %

Key word is “may” you ” may ” get ran over by a bus but it’s unlikely.
It is scaremongering bollocks ,heaven forbid you burn your own wood or similar and don’t buy expensive gas or electric to keep warm.
      Control just control .

What’s funny about this is wealthy areas are starting to get worse pollution than poorer areas, in cities. As people put in wood burning stoves and on cold windless nights the smoke sinks and creates a nice snug pollution blanket over the neighbourhood.

    7. Anyone else notice the steady stream of anti-wood burning stove articles of late?

Wait until study authors find out about the PM2.5s coming from the use of car tyres. Lots of particles. We going to ban cars? Don’t think so.

    9. conducted by the same morons that tell you to put the lid down when you flush probably

Unless the Chimney isn’t working at the smoke is getting into the room, I feel this is just Fearnongering BS.

Also my boiler has broken down and relying on a wood stove to keep me warm this winter so perfect timing for it.

Worse, in Africa they use them for cooking in huts and it’s horrific

Well, that can’t be true, because it would be too upsetting for some reason.

The meltdown here whenever this topic is brought up is ridiculous.

    14. Aggravating_Band_353 on

So if you smoked silk cuts indoors when wood burner was on you could be being more “healthy”?

What do they say about gas hobs also?i know not as polluting but heard not great

    15. Nothing more annoying than living next to someone with a wood burner. Goes out of your chimney, into my house.

    16. Derfel60 on

Oh no, i suppose ill just buy the ridiculously priced energy from a massive company that definitely didnt pay someone to write this article and use that to heat my house instead so that their CEOs and shareholders can make huge profits at my expense then.

This is complete and utter nonsense.

      >However, the link with health outcomes in high-income countries is not well understood and residential areas with high emissions are hard to identify using existing air quality monitoring networks.”

      >She added: “We found that people using solid fuel had lower rates of smoking and lung disease, which can mask the true effects of solid fuel exposure.

Headline is misleading, truth is they have absolutely no idea on the health outcomes related to wood burner usage

If stove was spilling products of combustion into the room, you’d be killed by CO long before air quality ever became an issue
