After Penly and Gravelines, EDF formalizes the Bugey EPR2 reactors(2 x 1775MW)

At the end of a four-month public debate, EDF has announced that it is continuing preparations for its project to build two nuclear reactors next to the existing Bugey power plant (Ain).

From January 28 to May 15, the Commission nationale du debat public (CNDP) organized a public debate on the Bugey nuclear power plant’s EPR2 reactor construction project. Although the project was widely contested by France Insoumise, the debate is said to have elicited “favorable expressions” and provided “abundant and rich” input from local residents.

At the end of this four-month long debate, and in view of these favorable expressions, EDF announces in a press release that it is continuing to prepare its project by submitting the necessary applications for administrative authorizations.

On Wednesday September 30, the prefecture of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region announced the launch of the “Grand chantier” initiative. As part of this process, prefect Fabienne Buccio will convene the EPR2 regional strategic committee by the end of the year to propose a new governance structure and define the project’s major orientations.

      A “socially responsible” project

A number of changes were made to the basic project as a result of the debate. Of the two options proposed, the first option involving the construction of two towers some 205 m high will be chosen. A cooling system to reduce the temperature of the water discharged into the Rhône will also be added to the project.

Through this project, EDF is announcing its commitment to carrying out a socially responsible and environmentally friendly project, “for the benefit of local residents and the surrounding area.” To this end, a number of actions will be implemented with the various site stakeholders. These include promoting local employment, avoiding and reducing impacts on the natural environment, and minimizing the road flows inherent in the site’s activities in the area.

EDF is also committed to transparent information and dialogue with the local public. In particular, it will set up ongoing information and consultation mechanisms for projects for which it is the contracting authority.

So for Bugey once those 2 EPR2 are completed 7150MW of electricty will be produced on site.

Works in Penly and Gravelines have already started since a year now, already 1200 People work in Penly while preparation are well underway in Gravelines.

Great news, it’s a pity that there only 2. We need way more.

As long as they are not bundling it up with fossil fuel expansions, or slashing renewables alongside, thats fine

Idk if this included such addenda or not

I wish Germans hadn’t been terrified of nuclear energy since the 1970s because some hippies spread stories about two-headed cows appearing around nuclear power plants.

I wonder if they will be able to cool their reactors in the future.

Nuclear energy has the worst marketing of mankind.

It’s the perfect example of an excellent idea with very poor marketing.

If they would call it fissure energy or something, instead of using the same name that the scary bombs had, it would have been less scary.
