Source in Finnish and behind a paywall. Some information on what it says in the article.

“It has been revealed that a Chinese state-owned company, Citic Telecom CPC, owns three submarine data cables in the Baltic Sea linking Finland, Estonia, and Sweden. These cables handle massive amounts of internet traffic between NATO countries meaning Beijing has direct influence over part of Europe’s digital backbone.

Citic Telecom CPC is ultimately controlled by the Chinese state through the Citic Group. Whoever owns a cable can technically access or redirect the data running through it from private communications to government traffic.

The ownership has been known to Finnish and Estonian authorities since 2019 but never openly debated. Meanwhile, the U.S. already banned Citic operations on national security grounds.

The cables even have Estonian government agencies and defense forces listed as customers. With 99% of the world’s internet traffic moving via undersea cables, this raises serious concerns over European security and data exposure.”

These cables must be put under the control of a European company, wtf.

I suppose these are the ones the russian conspiciously do not cut

    5. Its not good. However, basically all modern web traffic is encrypted as default. So snooping on the data wouldn’t reveal much. Worst case they could see the IP addresses and DNS hostnames

I wonder what % of the traffic going over these cables is unencrypted.

Ha! Why cut the cables when you can just own them?
