Europe has already backslid into a Delores Umbridge style bureaucratic authoritarianism and it does not have anything close to the free speech necessary to complain about it.

A hilariously bad article.
It’s full of Trump hate, but conveniently forgets that Trump is the exact product of American democracy, elected on his promises by the majority of the people.
Which I think perfectly sums up the Guardian’s (and European) views on democracy – “It’s a democracy as long as someone I like got elected. Once someone I don’t like gets elected, it’s fascism.”

Not only they are empowering the far-right but they are making sure they’ll have an extensive toolset to choose from once they get in power.

As an American, it’s a dire picture but we do have state and local governments that control all the govt functions that matter in our day to day lives, such as transportation, schools, policing, healthcare, and so forth. It’s kind of like Swiss cantons. That’s why Trump is removing federal funding for things but he can’t cancel or control them outright. They are supplementary to state funding.
What the Feds do control is immigration, trade policy, and foreign policy, so it’s more of an international story than a domestic one. My life hasn’t changed *at all* here in California. Except… you see what he’s doing with the (state) National Guard which are military reservists. That is very concerning.

Fascism isn’t caused by social media, fascism is the visceral reaction of middle-class people against an economy that does not benefit them. This is backed not only by historical data & votes (in Germany most of the voters of Hitler were middle-class or self-employed people), but by an analysis, and here it is.
Fascism historically arose in Germany & Italy as a reaction to socialist movements, and got sponsored by capitalists in order to squash socialism (Biennio Roso in Italy, and the KPD/more radical SPD in the Weimar Republic), but in the 21st century that is not the case.
When capitalism crashes (as it did in 2008), what is created is an erosion in the trust of the system – suddenly people do not trust “the banks”, the “institutions” and whathave you because they failed at their job. Given that the world was handed on a silver platter to capitalism after USSR dissolved in 1991, it seemed almost impossible and even improbable for capitalism to face major problems, after all most of the problems capitalism faced in post ww2 cold war were attributed to “the evil empire” to quote Reagan, with stagflation (the major economic problem of the 70s) being placed on the oil crisis caused by the Soviets because they were trying to meddle in the middle east. Generally speaking, if something was going wrong, it was the Soviets to blame.
But the 2008 crash reminded people that one of the inherent tendencies of markets is that they’re volatile, and the more financialized an economy becomes, the more prone to crashing it is, and the 2008 crash was spectacular, but EU & USA did a good job of “handling it” in the sense that EU didn’t suddenly reach poverty status (with the exception of southern Italy, parts of Spain & Greece), but instead the damage was **staggered.** This means that after the 2008 crisis, what we’ve been experiencing is the staggered damage of said crisis, austerity is a weird measure to pass after a crisis (who does that), but without austerity to ensure that we don’t reach a new low (just like the Great Depression), because austerity fucks the economy long-term but because of very strict fiscal responsibility you bailout the markets, the damage done by the 2008 crisis was staggered, and they could do that because EU & USA were in much better terms than they are today. EU was way more united, and USA wasn’t crumbling under its own weight. But, again, now things have changed.
Capitalism crashes – it always had, from the panic of 1857 to the panic of 1893, to the Great depression, to the stagflation of the 70s to the 2008 crisis, capitalism crashes, it is not a matter of if, but when.
So what does that have to do with fascism? Fascism is the LAST RESORT of capitalism – not liberalism, CAPITALISM. When shit hits the fan, capitalism crashes and people live in poverty, people (naturally) tend to develop anti-capitalist ideas (as has happened in the past), because this system failed you, so who will ENSURE private property stands, the capitalist mode of production continues and people don’t get rowdy ideas that might be anti-capitalist? A liberal status quo will not be able to maintain order, so they give the keys of authority to someone with a more firm hand, an iron fist, someone who can bend people using the military, propaganda and the state. Hobbes even described this (wayyy back ago) as “a state of emergency”, a state needs a penultimate solution to someone trying to sabotage the main property of capitalism, private property.
But the workers are not enticed by fascism, they do not view it favorably, why will this save us? This is the reason fascist movements NEVER relied on workers (unlike very stupid propaganda that floats around), it ALWAYS relied on middle-class and self-employed people. Why? Because you’re protecting their interests, middle-class and self-employed people have **some** form of property, if they lose even that, they feel as if they will completely disappear and lose all they worked for. Workers most of the time don’t own shit not their labor, certainly not their house.
So, what is fascism? Fascism is capitalism in decay.
Fascism does not erupt out of social media – social media definitely has helped, but without the preconditions for fascism (capitalism in decay), there can be no fascism. That is not to say every impoverished region is (or will become) fascist, because fascism’s symbols are “return to a glorious past”, you NEED to have a glorious past to return to, so that MEANS that you have decayed. It’s make America great AGAIN, not make America great.

They couldn’t quite figure out how to get people to click on their sites…then 2016 came, then Trump came and it all made sense… doom clicking.
It’s basically the idea that democracy and the world are in danger every 11 minutes and that it must be explained to people every 11 minutes.
These people don’t really care about democracy. If they did they wouldn’t be selling adverts in their newspapers to Chinese communist officials every other 5 minutes.

American democracy died already, what are we seeing now is the regimen consolidating and using their powers as it sees fit, from deploying national guard ignoring the laws, ICE breaking into homes without warrants and arresting national born citizens, the presidency using the DOJ to harass his “enemies”, and nothing happens, the frog has been boiled good, the next phase is starting to jail the effective (ie threatening)opposition [they are already working on that issue.](https://edition.cnn.com/2025/09/15/politics/left-wing-groups-trump-domestic-terrorists)
Americans are today in the same, deer in the headlights, state that liberal Russians were back in 2000 when Putin got into power, you can’t stop them, they now have full control of all the state resources, courts, plus the cooperation of the news and social media companies, they have already won. All this shit we’ve already saw it in Russia, Hungary, etc…
And the saddest thing about this is we are still lucky that the one in charge of this is Trump, mark these words: We are going to miss Trump, you are going to miss his dementia, his lack of discipline and focus and how easy is to pander and make him do you bidding if you know which keys press.
