Only one thing about the suspect certain people want to know about.

My fear is that this is an Islamist inspired terror attack. Because such incidents have been far too common in our recent history, they do feel somewhat predictable.
They’ve also never been properly addressed for fear of causing offence to one communities belief system.
If it does transpire, this is the case, I hope the government won’t engage in “controlled spontaneity” or ‘bury heads in the sand’ but actually have an honest parliamentary discussion on where we are as a nation and how to move forward constructively.

I know this will probably get lost in a sea of loyal team supporters pointing their fingers spiderman style at each other, but…
Leaving aside ethnicity, a few things have occurred to me today besides the obvious tragedy and human heartache of it all.
– the private police force that the UK Jewish community has been putting together was obviously necessary, they’ve been visible on the scene today and it sounds like one of them might have been a victim.
– the police response seems to have been very quick and decisive and saved lives.
– I can’t help but compare this sort of incident with our friends over the Atlantic. These things are rare enough here to be big news, and despite the attacker deploying the trifecta of vehicle, knife and (potential) bomb, the casualty rate is thankfully low. Thank goodness we don’t have the sort of weaponry available here that you can buy in a Walmart in the US.
– I wonder whether the attacker was known to the security forces? We don’t hear about it that much, but there is a LOT going on behind the scenes to identify and break up these potential terror attacks before they happen. Of course when one DOES get through, the instinct is to blame the government/police/MI5 for failings but I suspect if the full scale of what they’re dealing with were known, we’d be shocked and a lot more grateful for our relative safety.
In retrospect, as someone who grew up in an era of IRA bombings here on the mainland and of course in NI, it feels in retrospect that the late 90s, 2000s, despite 9/11 and the war on terror, were an era of relative peace in this country. Now overseas conflicts are arriving here more and more regularly even though I can’t see how murdering residents of Manchester could possibly change anything.

Regardless of how you feel, it’s undeniable that every single Islamic terrorist attack on British soil has been a byproduct of our involvement in the Middle Eastern wars.
We’re currently supplying arms to a country that is committing ethnic cleansing… and people are shocked that the violence has found it’s way to our shores?
All that “collateral damage” has a hefty price… Islamic extremism is one of them.

I was in a hospital that had to be locked down because of this incident. Although it was scary, this exchange on the ward walky talky made me burst out laughing.
“I can confirm the hospital is now fully locked down”…. “then why are people still coming in through the main entrance?”.

Does seem to echo other attacks in Europe in being much less sophisticated. 7/7 was horrific but an even like it is quite rare due to the amount of planning required. But anyone can drive a car into people and then get out with knives without drawing attention to the plan. It’s happened elsewhere like Germany.
Obviously it remains to be seen whether this individual was connected or more of a lone attacker. But terror organisations are training people to go for low sophistication attacks now.

Wonder if he was connected to the terrorists arrested yesterday in Germany, looking like they had planned to attack today also.

Thank god they were able to stop him from getting inside. RIP those who were murdered 🙁
