The amount of people involved in this death is disgusting. No one who cared for him over that period of time questioned anything? Where were the HCAs and the nurses advocating for their patients health in this?

Someone needs to be punished for medical negligence, someone’s lost their life it’s not enough for the hospital to do an investigation and say they’re sorry.

They murdered a disabled person through their negligence.

“An internal hospital investigation confirmed that a lack of nutrition contributed to Mr Poulton’s death. The report recommended better training across the Trust with regard to specialist care for patients with learning disabilities.”

No these people should be in fucking jail. This is not acceptable. They had NINE DAYS to realise somthign was wrong with not feeding the poor guy.

    3. radiant_0wl on

      Is the report public?

Because I’m confounded how such a situation could arose.

shocking but not surprising on the NHS, you have to be on top of everything in hospital or the risk of something going amiss is huge, not something a vulnerable patient like this gent, will be capable of doing. to be left for 9 days without anyone noticing his deterioration or severe dehydration is terrible.

own recent stay for e-coli was a catalogue of errors from not putting me IV fluids soon enough to then sticking K+ laden ringers in me whilst at a GFR of 20 with dehydration induced AKI.. guess what happened to my K+ levels? yep I needed emergency intervention with insulin and glucose. it just feels like you need to have done a medical degree yourself to keep abreast of every decision (or lack of) being made.

I’ve known a few retired nurses and they have tended to be so talkative and caring, I cannot imagine a situation where they wouldn’t chat to patients and advocate for them.

Is it a staffing issue which doesn’t allow that level of care now?

    6. This is such an odd story. How could none of the nurses or HCA’s caring for him on a day to day basis not notice he wasn’t getting any nutrition?

I am not surprised, my husband spent some time on a hospital ward next to a lovely older gentleman who ended up having a delirium after being nil by mouth for 3 consecutive days, because his operation kept being postponed. The guy had diabetes and this really messed him up.

We questioned the nurses but it was apparently protocol, he didn’t have any family advocating for him.

“Whoops we starved someone to death”

There would have been signs, probably cries from himself, malnutrition is one of the most painful and excruciating deaths you can imagine.

This is essentially murder by torture, jail time.

On a related note, my elderly mum just came out of hospital after about 10 days and honestly, if my brother and I weren’t there I don’t think she’d have eaten anything. They literally dump a plate of food by the bed, often out of reach and don’t help people to eat at all. There’s basically no provision on a geriatric ward for a group of people to go around making sure patients are eating at least something.

Absolutely disgusting response. They literally deliberately starved someone to death and then chalk it up to need more training? If you don’t know that people need food to live probably shouldn’t work in a hospital. Actually furious that zero ramifications.

Can easily see this happening. Patient is for theatre, is kept nbm, then is cancelled, so is “fed” a glass of water, then kept nbm

      Tragic, but predictable

    12. TheCrunker on

Another tragedy at the hands of our “world class” NHS

    13. SoggyWotsits on

I saw this man’s father giving an interview on the news last night and it was absolutely heartbreaking. What’s even worse is that there was another similar case in the report.

    14. tylerthe-theatre on

Not a mistake, gross negligence and this is something you’ll see in care homes to a lesser degree

This is why learning disability nurses need to be in general ward settings. Learning disability liaison nurses are hard to come by, a lot of trusts don’t see value in them.

They’re specially trained, usually taught makaton and BSL, are well versed in creating alternative communication aids etc to help someone with a LD in hospital. They also help to train other nurses from different fields etc.

This is systemic though. Many, many nurses from the adult field (general), don’t think LD nursing is real nursing, and see little to no value in doing any training in it.
Junior doctors, often only do half a day, or at a push, a day’s training in dealing with people with LD.

If the NMC and universities worked together to overhaul nurse training then it could help to prevent this.

It’s sickening that he was so neglected, he starved to death. And yet, it keeps happening. Symptoms overlooked etc because the individual can’t talk, or has limited vocabulary etc. Then some areas don’t allow the carer or family to be there to assist due to ‘protected mealtimes’.

So many things wrong with this case.

    16. Bitter_Quantity7116 on

The Police seem to be sacking their officers left, right and centre for much much less than starving a disabled person to death. Maybe not the upper ranks, but getting rid of the constables is happening daily. How the fudge hasn’t anyone been sacked, how is no one on trial? I think if the NHS were going through phones of their staff at the rate the Police do with theirs, you’d find the NHS is in a far poorer state in terms of staff than the Police. Everyone has a horror story about the NHS and they seem to get away with loads including starving downs adults to death.

    17. cheeseyespleese on

That is no mistake. Pure negligence and the people involved should be jailed.

    18. jenny_905 on

How the fuck does that get missed beyond a single day?

There’s multiple people involved in your care when in hospital and there had to have been someone who knew the nature of why he was there (broken hip) and queried why the patients was nil by mouth or at the very least queried why the patient was on it for so long.

    19. Mr_Emile_heskey on

The hospital has done shocking there. Every patient has a fluids and hydration chart that is checked regularly. There shouldn’t have been any misses as grave as this. Here’s hoping a proper investigation is done.

    20. OrdinaryBorder2675 on

This is straight negligence. 80% of doctors nurses dont give a shit anymore and continue to prove it. They would rather make dances on tiktok.
