Good question. I didn’t hear much from Serbia/Serbs. Someone told me it’s better not to speak hungarian, because they don’t like it, and maybe some radical would beat us up. My only experience with Serbs were here in Hungary and it wasn’t negative at all. They were nice ppl. And i would realy like to visit their Capital just as many other countries’ around Hungary.

I played water polo. I had a Serbian coach. We were in Serbia for a training camp. In training matches, we always won against the local team (unfortunately, I don’t remember the name of the town, but it was also inhabited by Hungarians), but despite that, we always considered the Serbs to be our biggest opponents (with respect). I can’t say much else. I read a lot about the Yugoslav war and the role of football ultras.

I think Serbian people are funny, they don’t take life too seriously. This can be also a disadvantage at work and business. 😅 They are pretty good at ball games, I played basketball and played with people from serbia.

The best zoo I’ve ever been to was the Paliĉ one. We could also make our own burgers in the zoo which was awesome and I wish we had that in Hungary

As a man who live in Szeged, its obvious that they are here. 😊 I really like serbian cuisine. Serbs are passionate. My experience, if I open-minded and interest them with a kind manner, they are kind and warm-hearted. I don’t have bad experience. But I confess you, I don’t care the nationality of any people. Be a good human, it is the only thing which is important. 😉

When I was 21 I got on a night train to Belgrad and traveled through Serbia alone. Some other passangers would always come to me and talk, they all had a story to share mostly about the war, their hometown, their problems or water polo. I liked listening them even though sometimes I couldn’t understand them because they rather used Serbian than English. Some offered me rakija too, so I gave them pálinka in exchange:). It was a great experience and I liked the vibes of Belgrad. I also saw beautiful forests and mountains when crossing the country, I think it’s underrated.

I mean Orbán looks like a fat pig in a suit, but he was a pretty handsome young lad. But Vucic? How are the ultra nationalists following him?

I’ve been to Serbia once, we went to Exit festival in Novi Sad. The border guards were the absolute worst that I’ve ever met in my entire life. They made passing miserable and searched our car both ways, checking our meds as if they were illegal drugs etc. Also pretended to not speak anything other than Serbian (later we learned that they understood us).
Other than that, it was pretty good. Accomodation and food was relatively cheap, we ate some amazing meals. The city was beautiful and we even went to the beach once. Surprisingly, a lot of Serbs came up to me at the festival in the crowd when they heard us talking in Hungarian. They were all very friendly and I talked to quite a few people in the mornings as the sun was rising. It was a pretty great experience.
It was mainly little things, like exchanging/sharing drinks (I know it’s not the smartest at a festival) while talking and stuff. One guy came up to me and started counting in Hungarian then asked me what words do I know in Serbian. Also one time I didn’t have enough money on my festival card or whatever and the bartender didn’t charge me and gave me the drinks anyway, lol. We also talked to a couple a lot in a restaurant, the guy was Hungarian and the woman was Serbian, they were really friendly too.
I heard that Novi Sad is pretty chill in this regard and the more “extreme” people mostly live in the Southern part of the country. Not sure how accurate is this tho

I used to live in the Hostel of the Serbian Gymnasium. impulsive troubled youngsters. I was witnessing an emotional debate between two people one was on the 5th level and the other on the first. And some of them were exceptionally pretty like unexplainably pretty they had some enigma. Our teachers were ethnic Serbian, they were harsh except Stevo prof. Our staff were Serbian, and they couldn’t see the difference in the age they saw only nationality. I was 15 I could do the same thing as the Hungarian University student. like coming back late, drinking alcohol, and so on. At the same time a Serbian university student had to come back to middle school curfew they looked back better for Serbians. I had to leave as the Balkan fight were flaring up so more kids were shovelled to Budapest so we had no free space there.

Due to outcome of WW1 born in a place that is now part of it. Lived there for 30 years. I know well turbofolk and nationalism from 90s. I have seen how ethnic minorities are drafted in and taken into war in Bosnia, Krajina and later in (so called) Kosovo to die for greater Serbia (srbija do tokija).
I have seen how Serbians (those south from Danube) are bleeding out Vojvodina in therms of resources.
Of course in wider family I have relatives, who call themselves Serbs.
From the other side I think that the opportunity for ethnic minorities to learn on their native language is one of a kind, but it’s only in Vojvodina and yeah since past 10-15 years that is degrading.
I think if Ðindić would not have been killed, the country would be already Eu member with Euro as currency, just like Croatia.
As opposite of other commenters, I don’t think that Serbians are aggressive or loud bunch of rednecks, I do think, those who describe Serbians as aggressive or loud are pussy snowflakes.
Overall mixed feelings as you might guess.
Ahh one thing: One thing that Serbians and Hungarians have in common, that both are hated by neighbouring countries.

Depends on the region. The northern part that used to be Hungary is nice. Most Hungarians there speak Serb and most Serbs speak Hungarian. Most settlement signs are written in 3 ways: latin Serb, cyrillic Serb, and Hungarian. Most people get along quite well and there’s mutual respect. Once you go further South you meet the wannabe-Russians and they tend to be assholes.
