There needs to be more control over dogs full stop. A proper licence and registration system for one, with more restrictions on more dangerous breeds.

People humanise their dogs to a worrying degree and we need to treat them as what they are, animals.

Not disputing that XL Bully’s are a dangerous breed, but clearly there is a wider problem too, which is lack of responsible owners.

My wife almost got bitten on a walk last month by a St Bernard, which lunged upon approach to us without any provocation and snapped at her arm. Wasn’t on a lead, had no name recall, owner also had no physical control because of the size of the dog. The owner said “oh he’s just protective around my kids”. How about get your bloody dog under control.

I say this as a dog lover and responsible pet owner. My wife is a vet nurse. We both know how to approach (or not approach) dogs out on their walks, and have a reasonable understanding of dog behaviour.

I am in massive favour of pet licences to make pet owners more accountable for their pets training and behaviour and to put off those who clearly aren’t fit to responsibly own an animal.

Strange we see the lives of chav dogs as more important than our own. Or at least it seems rather a lot of people do.

Lack of requirements to train your dog so they grow wild.

If it was mandatory that all dogs must attend 6 months training and pass, you would see better results.

People get a dog and expect it to be an angel but dogs require hierarchy, training, routine. At the end of the day they still have instincts.

There’s an interesting corelation between the rise in dog attacks and the increase in bad behaviour in schools.

Some people just aren’t willing to train or control their feral little beasts.

Lockdown and the phenomenon of Lockdown Dogs was the perfect time to look into dog licencing and I said it at the time.

(To many downvotes and snarky replies, might I add.)

As a dog owner myself I’d happily pay a licence fee and for there to be a requirement for a mandatory annual check up at the vets if it aids in animal welfare and, frankly, acts as a barrier to the Dog For Christmas crowd.

    7. HungreeRunner on

All dogs should be licensed and trained to a specific degree whilst carrying insurance to make the owners liable for any damages to other pets/people/property and actually face prosecution.

However, that requires policing/enforcement etc, of which there is a distinct lack of, even for large crimes. Unfortunately I think we are way off the idealistic world where the above is introduced and enforced.

    8. Everyone seemed happy with the idea of simply banning another breed and considered that to be a job well done and moved on to the next thing. The thing they forgot to do when looking at the ban was the owner; yes XLs may be inherently more dangerous than other breeds but there are plenty of common breeds that can be dangerous in the wrong hands. Rather than just add another breed to the banned list the government should have looked more deeply into the issue around ownership.

    9. Dissidant on

Some breeds are dangerous/high risk and simply don’t belong as domesticated/household dogs, but then some owners don’t have any business having a dog period or pet for that matter.
Its not too far fetched to envisage a scenario of pets with go-pros like how we use dash cams on vehicles, or mandatory insurance for dogs specifically, its one of those situations where the majority of pet owners (who IMO are responsible) have it spoiled by a minority of morons

    10. Dapperscavenger on

Knee-jerk policies of banning breeds instead of tackling the underlying issue didn’t fix it? Shock! I am shocked!

Every time we ban one breed the idiots just pick another perfectly good dog breed to ruin.

And the perception of dangerous breeds changes over time. I remember when it was Doberman’s, then Rottweilers, then German shepherds. Then it was pit bulls and now it’s XL bullies. Nothing has actually changed!

We’re having all the same issues and discussion that we were having 30 years ago!

    11. I’ve said it multiple times, it’s not the dog, it’s the owner.
Smaller dogs are just as bad but because they are small and don’t do hardly any damage. People just brush it off.

You’d not let a staff or XL bully jump up at people and be walked off a lead if it had zero training, so why do people do the same with other dog breeds.

    12. OptionalQuality789 on

As a dog owner, it’s abundantly clear that people are shit dog owners.

I see it all the time. Dogs off lead with zero recall, no socialisation training, people getting dragged down the street by their dog on a lead, not picking up dog poo etc.

My rescue dog is a bit nervous of dogs that approach him with too much excitement and energy and he’ll back off. But often times these dogs will try to chase him. Owners absolutely do not like to be told to get their dog under control after it’s sprinted 50m away from them to chase my dog and I’ve had a number of altercations with people over this.

Most of the time it’s ‘doodle’ breeds or small dogs. Small dogs are the worst trained group by a huge majority.

The reality is that a lot of dog owners should not have dogs.

    13. FitSolution2882 on

The amount of lazy fucks who don’t train or excercise their dogs is insane.

I see multiple people nearby who have large, powerful breeds who get a short ten minute walk per day and are otherwise left alone in the house for most of the rest of it. They barely even get any time in the dam garden.

You have others that let their dog yap and yap for hours on end – whislt they’re home I may add so there is no excuse about them not knowing.

You’ve got yet more that do absolutely zero training or even make a reaction when their little dog is going absolutely batshit as I walk my calm one past.

You’ve then got the issue that neither the Local Authority or Police give a shit about any of the above nor tackling the local chavs who still walk their XL Bully abomination without a muzzle….

As a guide dog handler, I wish they would bring back dog licenses and enforce leash regulations. I would happily pay for a license. I’m sick of off leash dogs running up to us snarling and screaming and owners who act like it’s our fault they can’t control their substitute children.

I also have a trained protection dog, luckily for them he’s flawless and knows that I or my fiance are the ones who are going to yeet aggressive, off leash dogs away from him. He’s muzzled and kept on a short leash if he has to go out and about in public. I’m a 100lb blind girl for fucks sake. Do better.

(it’s called a screen reader, before someone once again shows their ignorance about blind folk)

    15. Extra-Fig-7425 on

I do think there should be a mandatory test before being allowed to have a dog.
I need it for to fly my small drone and is defo safer then a dog.

    16. franklindstallone on

There needs to be dog licensing and set up some rules like tiny people who can’t control some monster sized dog should not be allowed to have it.

Also we’ve created a society where more people feel insecure and given they can’t a gun or even carry a knife they’ve just moved to the next best thing.

They’re not necessarily qualified in owning any dog let alone a large one but there’s also a chance they have no interest in making it docile.

    17. Neddlings55 on

Ive owned dogs for over 30 years now, and im seriously questioning whether my current boy will be my last, and its purely down to piss poor, ignorant and irresponsible dog ownership.

Im sick of the lack of enforcement of the various legislation we have. The police are only interested if certain breeds are involved.

We regularly have two labs in the area that get out and cause problems. They have attacked livestock, they have attacked other dogs, they have bitten people, they have cause a serious RTA. They NEVER have the legally required collar and tag. The owner has never, ever, faced any sort of consequence apart from having to pay the council dog warden to get them back.

The issue isnt breed, its ownership, training and lack of enforcement/consequences.

    18. TulipTatsyrup on

I’m going to cause much controversy here.

I’m a single female who lives alone.

I have called the police on multiple occasions regarding my safety. With zero help.

I am in two weeks’ time picking up a Mastiff Rottweiler cross

I need to sleep safely in my home.

    19. LithiumAmericium93 on

People are becoming more degenerate. Its almost like a dog’s behaviour is influenced enormously by the owner

    20. Naive_Carpenter7321 on

Blame the dog, ban the breed, the problem persists. I wonder why.

Maybe we should start looking at the owners instead of the dogs. Pet ownership is a privilege which should be earned, not a birthright.

    21. GendhisKhan on

I cycle a lot. I get chased by dogs sometimes. The owners have no recall ability and seem to think the dog is just having fun. Luckily I haven’t had to boot a dog yet, really not something I want to do.

    22. Trundlenator on

Criminally charge owners if their dog attacks someone(assault, manslaughter etc.)

You’ll see a sharp rise in dog owner responsibility and a drop in dog attacks.

Dog owner’s irrresponsibility and negligence is a bigger cause than bad dogs.

    23. ThatIestyn on

XL bully’s have a higher potential to be dangerous and a rightly a banned breed. But the root of the problem is a weird dangerous dog culture that has developed.

Certain people long to posses dangerous things. Im not sure the answer but the problem will not get better until that is solved
