Success: Chat Control Is on the Brink of End
Dear friends!
This is good news: Germany will likely not support the Danish Council Presidency’s proposal for random chat control in the Council of Member States. There are also indications that the vote in the Council on this will now be postponed indefinitely.
For a long time, it looked as if Germany, at the urging of the CDU/CSU, would switch to the camp of chat control advocates. But thousands upon thousands of emails from citizens and associations, petitions and phone calls, webinars (like ours last week), and events have been successful. Thank you to everyone who has campaigned!
This success shows: public pressure and a strong civil society work!
But: Our chats will only be secure once the federal government has taken a clear position and the vote in the Council has been officially postponed for next week. And it is also clear: There will be a next proposal.
That’s why it’s worth writing emails and calling members of parliament again to make sure that random chat monitoring really won’t happen, now and in the future. The federal government must take a clear and fundamental stance against client-side scanning.

Thank you for your tremendous support on this issue. This wouldn’t have been possible without you.
Today is a good day.

I wish Germany also had political influence over our domestic chat control legislation

Good news. The country that suffered under Stasi, hellbent on controlling and invigilating every aspect of citizens lives – should be the first in line to fight Chat Control. I am happy that Germany’s position on it finally turned around, though slightly frustrated it even needed turning.
Because there will be next attempt. And another one after this.

This statement comes from a Green MEP, so it is naturally framed in a particular way. In the end, it appears that the CDU/CSU parliamentary group was chiefly responsible for blocking Chat Control. While CDU cabinet members may be more divided on the issue, they do not have the leverage to overrule the parliamentarians who, moreover, have a clearer sense of how the party base views the matter.
