I was in my early twenties back then and it was such a defining moment in my life. Not that I was much in favor of a more powerful Germany, but talking to people from the East, I learned how much they were looking for freedom from socialism. I had been in Prague the year before right after their velvet revolution, and it was just the same.
It’s so sad to me that the memory of how liberating it was has been mostly lost and it’s all negativity and cynicism now.
