A drought has been declared in parts of East and West Sussex due to declining water levels at a reservoir.
The Environment Agency (EA) has changed the status of the areas around Haywards Heath and Eastbourne to drought, with Ardingly Reservoir’s water level at 27.6% total capacity.
The drought has been declared for the area supplied by South East Water (SEW) after hot and dry weather impacted availability of supplies, the EA said.
Nick Price, SEW’S head of water resources, said the River Ouse catchment had only experienced two years with lower spring and summer rainfall in its 155-year recorded history.
He added: “Consequently, the River Ouse, where we take water from in Sussex for supply and to refill our Ardingly Reservoir, is running low.”
The reservoir supplies 228,000 homes with drinking water.

Surely they’ll be redoubling their efforts on tackling leaks then given the reservoir is so low and they are losing 102,000,000 litres a day from leaks in the system.
Businesses cleaning patios and driveways are still exempt. I figure they can’t be too concerned if you’re not allowed to wash your own car or driveway, but can pay someone else to do it for you.

Why have a graphic comparing water levels from April 2025 to September 2025? Of course the reservoir is lower at the end of summer than at the start.

It always makes me laugh that people think the Government having full control of the utilities companies would be some kind of magic wand.
A massive reason why the utility networks, especially water is so fucked is because for decades successive Governments ran it on shoe string.
By the time Thatcher came to sell it all off it was basically surviving on hope, dreams and a shit ton of suck tape.
Governments are famously terrible at running any kind of public service.
The thought of any British Government running the Utilities fills me with dread.
We do not privatisation, we need Regulatory Bodies to actually have real powers and teeth so they can give private companies a good kicking and are actually scared of them unlike now where they are no more of a slight annoyance.

I’m assuming car washes will stay open. It isn’t clear on the SEW website [https://www.southeastwater.co.uk/about/updates/tubs-sussex/](https://www.southeastwater.co.uk/about/updates/tubs-sussex/)
