Denmark plans to spend $8.5 billion on new ships and aircraft, Danish officials said Friday, an investment designed to stave off President Trump’s threat to take over Greenland.

The purchase is aimed at showing the White House that Denmark is [taking security in Greenland seriously](https://www.wsj.com/video/inside-the-danish-militarys-largest-ever-drill-to-defend-greenland/CDE478BF-37C1-4041-9B31-C4E7218793D6?mod=article_inline) after Trump and his top aides accused Copenhagen of leaving the self-ruling Danish territory vulnerable to what they say are incursions by China and Russia. Trump made clear this summer that he is still interested in purchasing the mineral-rich Greenland.

“Security in the Arctic and the North Atlantic is a common interest for the Kingdom of Denmark and the United States,” said Denmark’s ambassador to the U.S. Jesper Møller Sørensen in an interview. “Today’s announcement underscores our commitment to further strengthen defence and security in the region with capabilities that expand the assertion of sovereignty and surveillance.”

Denmark will spend $4 billion to protect the Arctic, including buying or leasing two new Arctic ships, a number of maritime patrol aircraft and drones, according to Danish officials. The investment will also include a new headquarters for Denmark’s Arctic Command, building a North Atlantic subsea cable between Greenland and Denmark, and establishing an early warning radar in East Greenland. 

An additional $4.5 billion will go toward buying 16 new F-35 fighter jets from the U.S., bringing Denmark’s total fleet to 43. Other European countries are planning to purchase dozens of F-35s: the Netherlands plans to buy 52 while the U.K. will eventually have a fleet of 138. 

Greenland, along with the Faroe Islands, forms part of the Kingdom of Denmark, a North Atlantic Treaty Organization member. 

Trump’s interest in acquiring Greenland, which he initially [floated](https://www.wsj.com/articles/trump-eyes-a-new-real-estate-purchase-greenland-11565904223?mod=article_inline) in his first term, rocked the Danish government, which has owned the island for more than 300 years and has said it isn’t for sale. An overwhelming majority of Greenlanders [oppose](https://www.veriangroup.com/news-and-insights/opinion-poll-greenland-2025) the idea of annexation by the U.S., according to a January poll. 

Since returning to office, Trump and senior administration officials have made clear that the U.S. president is still concerned with Greenland’s security and hasn’t given up on plans to acquire it. In a March visit to the island, Vice President [JD Vance](https://www.wsj.com/topics/person/jd-vance) urged Greenlanders to sever ties with Denmark, saying the government in Copenhagen hasn’t done enough to protect the Arctic island of 60,000 people. Then-National Security Adviser Mike Waltz and Energy Secretary Chris Wright joined Vance for the visit, which sparked outrage in Denmark and Greenland. 

During an [interview with NBC](https://www.wsj.com/world/greenland-spying-us-intelligence-809c4ef2?mod=article_inline) in May, Trump declined to rule out taking the island by force. 

“I don’t rule it out,” he said. “I don’t say I’m going to do it, but I don’t rule out anything. No, not there. We need Greenland very badly. Greenland is a very small amount of people, which we’ll take care of, and we’ll cherish them, and all of that. But we need that for international security.”
