Surprised they’ve lasted this long. There was very little music on them even in the pre-streaming era.

MTV2 was incredible back in 2000-2008 or so. Just banger video after awesome video, live performances and full set lists for Queens of the Stone Age, Radiohead, Muse, etc. everything from Weezer to The Dillinger Escape Plan.
Discovered so many awesome bands and genres that shaped my music tastes to today
That’s what I’ll remember, never watched MTV1

End of an era. So does that mean they’ll keep airing their shitty reality shows?

Didn’t MTV literally stand for Music Television? Doesn’t this mean its very existence false advertising now?

It still had music channels?
I thought it was all just reality trash

This makes me sad, but it’s a sign of the times. Back in the 90s, I would watch MTV all day if I could get away with it, then later I’d flick between MTV, MTV2, VH1 and The Box.
Unfortunately, it’s now essentially a dead medium, thanks to streaming and online platforms. Music videos go straight onto YouTube and the algorithm will shape the music tastes of a lot of young people.

Kerrang TV, Scuzz and MTV2. flick around when a song I didn’t liked popped up. Golden age

MTV hasn’t been about the music for at least a decade or more I’d say. I used to love music video channels back in the day, and MTV1 for its entertainment as a teenager.
Then freeview got some free music channels and it was amazing too. I imagine with the rise of YouTube though they don’t get close to the amount of views anymore worthwhile – and with things such as Spotify and such meaning people find new music even more at their finger tips than before.
MTV2, VH1, Kerrang etc were great back in the day

I only want MTV Europe to come back.
Our uni student union used to have it on all day long. Great memories.

RIP Manchester Telly, you were the soothing balm to this old builders lorry hands after a fortnight of masoning the local motorway, and the ambrostic unguent which was gently plied upon my heavy heart when the barman told me “Oi Macduff, hold, enough!”.

Christ on a bike. Reading this thread is making me waaaay to nostalgic. 1980’s through to 2000 with MTV, VH1, Box, Karrang, even Radio 1 (Zane Lowe, The Rock Show, Danny Rampling and all that), they were amazing. Late night Bevis, and that TV cartoon show that had dead rock stars. Plus Never Mind The Buzzcocks!
Linear TV may be dead, streaming services are soleless……..but those days were epic.
I won’t shed a tear that MTV’s dead because it died years ago when it became reality TV and endless ads.

I’m sure this will really upset everyone who watches them, both of them won’t know what to watch now

I remember when they launched MTV Uk and Ireland. It was fun having Select MTV in London instead of the US and i loved how much they pushed like Placebo and Feeder on the channel. I then loved the US based shows like US top 20 where they had so much Rock dominating the charts, whereas in the UK it was a mix of Britpop, Indie and pop with dance. Then the Euro top 20 which had all that fantastic euro pop. We had so much exposure to all countries music that i remember just leaving MTV on all day.
I miss having access to such wonderful long form art and creativity. I wish we could go back to that medium.

I’m probably one of the few who still watches to these channels. I pop them on as we’re winding down to go to bed so as not to get engrossed in a TV show and go up late. There’s something quite nice about not being in complete control of the music like we all are with Spotify etc.
I’ll miss them when they’re gone.

I’m surprised they lasted long as they did. I’m guessing this must have something to do with the Paramount and Skydance merger and needing to refresh their portfolios and cutting costs with what no longer is profitable.
To be honest, 8-10 years ago probably would have been the realistic time to have called it a day with music tv channels. Smart TVs and streaming sticks were starting to become a standard and streaming/on demand was definitely a new norm by that point too. YouTube, Vimeo, etc. was pretty much the main place to watch music videos from 2007/2008 onwards, or whatever was embedded on people’s MySpace or Bebo pages.
The days were numbered once more or less everyone got more online rather than just the tech savvy and youngsters of the 90s/00s.
I didn’t get to fully experience all the satellite music video channels unless I was at friends or family members’ houses where they had the Box, Kerrang, MTV, MTV 2, etc.
When I did, I enjoyed the variety – especially as i wasn’t able to access the Internet from my home until 2007.
My teen years were mostly the Freeview Free To Air music video/ent channels such as The Hits (later 4Music) and TMF (later Viva) over on Freeview threw the towel in early and probably at the right time, despite Paramount owning TMF/Viva and The Box/Channel 4 owning The Hits/4Music.
I remember the video chart countdown at 6pm each day, I think it was? It was pretty interactive as people could vote and send messages in, but sadly it was of its time. I do miss those days, to be honest.
With TMF/Viva they were showing some of the same reality TV content and shows such as Celebrity Deathmatch, My Sweet 16, Dirty Sanchez, Jackass, Pimp My Ride, Drawn Together, etc. outside of the music video programing blocks. Strangely though, they aired Teen Wolf (another MTV programme) over on 5Select late at nights for a while, and although Channel 5 have a lot of Paramount licensed shows, its think Viva had another brief stint at a rebrand before they called it a day? So, why didn’t that end up on there??
The Hits/4Music just became an extension of E4 anyway, so made sense to close 4Music and merge it into the E4-channels. I think the last time I watched 4Music was to watch Supernatural when they aired it late at night (probably almost decade or more ago!).
