Not surprising. Chinese goverment is funding the car manufacturers massively. They know electric cars are the future. American manufacturers died with oil crisis so japanese took over. Now this is the next take over.
Fair enough, they are cheap and surprisingly high quality. US carmakers have fallen behind, with the exception of Tesla, but now that brand is toxic. Most European ones, while high quality, are much more expensive than the Asian brands. I know several people with a new electric Kia over the last few years too, so they are also doing well.
Is it any wonder when their prices are fairly reasonable compared to most European car makers.
Very interesting as Chinese vehicles don’t get the UK government subsidies that European car manufacturers get for EV sales. But we also don’t have any tariffs on EV cars from China unlike in the EU.

Everyone who is bying BYD shows that they don’t care if Ruzzians are killing Ukrainians and China is the big helping hand in this
I was looking into the BYD and VW ID.3 earlier this year but decided against it. I think in a few years when I sell my current car, I might look into it the BYD as it did surprise me with what it had to offer…
Oh, they’re going to find out why these cars are called “Buy your death”. The batteries in these Chinese EVs are low quality and are extremely susceptible to thermal runaway. They can literally randomly ignite and you aren’t putting it out until it’s done burning.
It’s a bullshit headline.
BYD is at 2.2% market share and around 35k cars over the past year, VW has sold close to 4 times the amount of cars.
They sold 20,000 cars in the UK in 2025 up from 8k the prior year
The simple reason is they’re much cheaper than any alternative and britain is unfortunately not as much as it used to be even 20 years ago.
There should be taxes applied on those cars.
That’s unfair competition. if it continues as it is, it will destroy auto industry in Europe.
Canadians take note
Yeah, keep buying Chinese and in a few years European car industry will go to shit. Just to save a few $ on the short term…
My next car will likely be a BYD. Currently drive an Audi e-tron, and the experience is akin to being a beta tester. Also refuse to drive a Tesla because the company is permanently bound to a mentally unstable junkie.
No surprise, Chinese EVs have great value for money
It’s not surprising. China tried almost 20 years ago to kick start their ICE car production capability by bringing in japanese and american engineers but they produced mostly crap, it takes a long time to design and build out your own powertrains and even longer to work out the kinks to make them reliable.
So they pivoted to to EVs instead. So rather than playing catch up with the rest of the world to produce a similar product they saw the opportunity to become market leaders in the next iteration of cars. Which they’ve basically done. They produce EVs at a lower cost and higher quality than most of the established auto makers, from brands that nobody had even heard of a few years ago.
They have the chance to be for EVs what Japan was to the ICE car in the 80s and 90s.
