RTE has defended its handling of Ray D’Arcy’s sudden departure, insisting the radio presenter was given three months’ notice that his current contract would not be renewed. Last Thursday the national broadcaster made the bombshell announcement that D’Arcy would be leaving RTE Radio 1 with immediate effect.

D’Arcy, 61, said he was “hugely disappointed” with how RTE management handled his departure.
“I’ve been with Radio 1 for the past 11 years. In that time I have worked with some brilliant people. I want to thank them,” he said.

In a statement issued on Saturday night, the national broadcaster said D’Arcy, who helmed his mid-afternoon programme on Radio 1 for more than a decade, had been made aware that “nothing was guaranteed” beyond the end of his current contract. According to RTE, D’Arcy was informed that Patricia Monahan, the recently appointed director of audio, “would likely want to make changes”. The discussions, the broadcaster said, were “acknowledged”, and D’Arcy had asked that any final decision be conveyed “in good time”. Three months out from the end date of D’Arcy’s current contract, he was told by RTE that it would not be renewed and the broadcaster “wished to explore other opportunities.”

Three months is more than anyone working a normal job would get and I imagine on his wage he should have a nice emergency fund for himself.

He promised to emigrate if Enda Kenny became Taoiseach so he had notice to leave since 2010.

    4. So the real story here is 1) he was a contractor 2) his contract was due to end 3) he was informed 3 months prior to the end of his contract that it wasn’t being renewed

Does anyone remember the time he said something incredibly weird and bad to caller, i think they’d survived cancer via op, and he made a reference to their ‘ghost anus’ i think? It was such a deeply strange thing to say.

Plenty of time. Who is actually complaining, besides probably D’Arcy himself?

My own opinion of D’Arcy for those who did not ask, I’ve always found him a bit weird, very awkward as an interviewer. TV presenting he’s alright does the job, You’re A Star and all that shite come to mind. Best work is with all the puppets. Even as an adult I’d go out of my way to watch him with the old gang again in any format

“Ray declined the offer to discuss further and asked to leave RTE as soon as possible. RTE agreed to facilitate that he finish October 10, as requested, and to his request that no announcement would be made until after that date,” the spokesman said.  RTE said D’Arcy received a press query last Thursday and then contacted RTE to say that “he would not be going on air that day, and that he had done his final show”.

Okay just trying to piece together this timeline… Assuming that the 3 months’ notice refers to 3 months from NOW (i.e. end of the calendar year, more or less) then D’arcy was informed earlier this week, asked to leave asap instead, they set his last day as Friday and then he simply refused to do another episode? In which case, it’s entirely his call that he didn’t get to formally say goodbye.

I like the way this headline is phrased.

I like to think it was something like The Ring – he was sitting at home, watched a scary videotape (Fair City?), and the phone rings and a little girl with a gravelly voice at the other end says “… three months”.

    9. So Friday was going to be his last day and on Thursday morning he decides to quit because he got some media question. And he didn’t want RTE to make any announcement until after his last show.

Looks like RTE were happy to let him see it out as he wanted and a leak spooked him into quitting.

Not sure what else RTE was supposed to do?

The most talented radio presenter RTÉ ever had. Best of luck Ray of sunshine

There’s bound to be more to this. Seems odd that he’d burn his bridges with RTÉ when it seems to be a revolving door of “talent” coming and going between TV and Radio.

Thisbisbthe most exciting thing about Ray D’Arcy and its still boring af

    13. I knew someone who was a contractor at RTE when the shit hit the fan and they were released immediately. Darcy got 3 months notice to sort his affairs and is whinging like a baby, give me a break.

Well I’m sure as a top level talent he’ll be snapped up by one of the many private broadcasters…

I always remember him making a snide remark to Rob Heffernan after he came 4th in the London Olympics about whether he got a certificate as he didn’t win a medal. Obnoxious prick. Heffernan said they did actually get a cert for being in the top 10 I think. He later got bumped up to third when the Russian got disqualified.

      More than most get.

Besides, he’s not living paycheck to paycheck. And he will have sponsorships and other sidegigs spinning their wheels

250k a year for a dire 90 mins of radio, 5 days a week. No wonder he was axed.

Doubt Newstalk/TodayFM will be tempted after he jumped ship to RTE.
