Own them, or are paying mortgages on them? This map is most likely just showing huge amounts of debt.

I’m surprised by the amount of people in mainland Europe that are owners. I thought the majority of people in big cities like Madrid would rent. (Long term rent. Eg 99 years) Silly me.

Are they counting people that live in their families home as owning their own homes? No way it’s that high.

A lot of people are surprised at both how high Ireland is and how high home ownership is in Europe.
It’s dated to say that Ireland is high in home ownership. At its highest in the early 90s the home ownership rate was 80% here. As we can see 80% would be higher than most of Western Europe now.
Eastern Europe after communism sold off a lot of housing stock to then renters so it’s home ownership rate rocketed. So the entire continent is now at 75%, but Western Europe is lower.
Also the rate of home ownership for people under 40 is much lower.

The point people make about Ireland having a “home-ownership” culture giving people unrealistic expectations of how f they should be able to buy a house is bollocks then

75 percent European average? That’s a lot.

Weird that the people with the lowest percentage of home owners are also the wealthiest. (CH)
