What is holding Norwegians back from joining the EU?

With Trump’s trade war against EU and other countries (including Norway) and at the same time Russia’s provocations against Svalbard archipelago there is an increased percentage of Norwegians who start reconsidered their relations with European Union

With the state of Germany and France, which are the EUs core, it’s surprising that the sentiment is rising.

That is a cherry picked survey from March this year.
Support for membership have since dropped again.

Article from altinget.no has an August 2025 poll with 55% no and 33% yes
For now, the most that EU can hope is Norwegians pegging their crown with the euro; eventually, when the transition will be more advanced and oil less critical they will enter too

Nah don’t join, there’s no point.

I think that countries that were offered the opportunity to join early and only decided to join late should pay more.
I mean at this point they’d only be joining cause they’re scared of Russia. Even if Norway joining would greatly benefit the EU, it’s a bit too self-interested.

Shouldn’t do it. They are better with the current system.

Seeing how nationalism is on the rise, even a slight majority in favour of EC ascession would probably not be a solid ground to start talks. The EU should focus on consolidation right now rather than expansion.

Glad to see, but can we please ensure that this is a clear vote. For example, require an 66% majority before decisions are made? Not like with Brexit.

The eu wil sadly have collapsed by 2035

And they say Trump’s presidency have achieved nothing good.

Terrible idea. They’ll make Norway spend their wealth fund on bailing out France.

Not 10% but 10 percentage point.

Are they not aware of the state of the EU? I know their state TV is very one sided but they all have phones.

As a Norwegian, I wonder where they get these numbers from. In my opinion they are not representative, at all.

Norway and Switzerland must join EU, there’s no other way. Why such resistance? Our russian-backed separatist region of Transnistria has more pro-EU voters I think 😁

This sub is so hellbent on the narrative that Norway is on the «verge of joining EU at any moment» and that there are «absolutely no downsides for Norway to join and they should just do it already». Just stop.
When it’s actually up for debate and a hot topic in Norwegian politics, we’ll tell you.

Norway can have migrants or asylum seekers like other EU nations

I don’t understand why they want to be in the EU. They have an amazing deal with the EU which gives them several benefits of being in it without being in it.

It’ll cost Norway to join. They’ll be expected to share their wealth. Their fishing territory will be the first thing to go.

Russia is a miracle worker here and Trump also. Many Norwegians start to understand that the more united Europe is economically the better.
Not to mention the fact that UK Brexit is not going well also.
