Cape Verde make it and Ireland don’t. That right there tells you everything you need to know about the level of our national team.
Can’t even beat Armenia ffs

This kind of seems like us trying to have it both ways tbh.

Africa were given a lot more extra places than Europe for the World Cup. I wouldn’t equate a team qualifying from one part of the world being better than a team from another that failed to qualify.
That being said Cape Verde have beaten some very good teams over the last few years and Pico Lopes has been consistently starting throughout that time. They deserve to qualify more than Ireland does right now.
There’s also a question about players from the League of Ireland playing for Ireland. Previously it was argued that players should be picked from the league, almost as a token gesture. But now I think there’s 3 or 4 players that could legitimately be called up on merit. If Pico Lopes can be a mainstay in a team that has beaten some of the best teams in Africa, then others could play a similar role in an Irish team that is playing at a low level at the moment.
