Certainly has gone a bit quiet but we have a lot of new projects kicking off next month and into the new year. Summer can always be quiet

Is this the whole country or just Dublin? Housing construciton in Cork is absolutlely booming. Probably close to 3,000 units under construction at the moment in the city alone

Really? I’m currently looking at two city giraffes as I type this.

It’s going to keep happening until NIMBYism is tackled and labour costs fall.

Throw out housing, public transport and active transport objections and open to floodgates to Turkish, Georgian and Western Balkan labour and their families.

If you want to have Celtic Tiger building rates, you need Celtic Tiger building policies.

The government is trying to throw money at the problem rather than address the issues around building and planning. And sadly trying to address the issues will be highly contentious at every level you can imagine and more. The planning process, local authorities, guide lines, the legal process, EU, etc. and the fact that changing it will be hugely disruptive.

Tough and unpopular decisions will be needed to get housing working but no party is willing to compromise on their area.

Where I work,is closely linked to construction industry (while having an input into other industries as well)

Housing and building has fallen off a cliff,if they remove roadworks and broadband from construction clarification and it’s collasped altogether……

whatever fiddling they doing on domestic economy figures is hiding some mess, noone is doing anything much with ages,

    7. Builders are having planning permission repeatedly rejected, mostly for fairly spurious or obscure technical details. I’m not surprised they aren’t bothering, it’s costing a fortune to draft up all the documentation with a high chance you’ll be either rejected or tied up in a legal morass – better to hold off and let the land value appreciate.

Planning permission doesn’t really need an explanation as to why that’s an issue with locking in delivery.

There are many areas around the country where Eirgrid doesn’t have the capacity to facilitate the development of a housing project without significant upgrades to the grid.

Irish Water also aren’t able to keep up with their backlog of new connections.

And lastly, due to building height limits and the increase in construction costs, it’s becoming less profitable for developers to build high-density units. The higher you can build, the less the cost-per-unit is to build it.

Throwing money at developers doesn’t really get past those points.

    9. The day these clowns were elected, I said we’d have a worse housing crisis at the next election. Not a hope I’ll be wrong on this one.

Jack Chambers on RTE last week talking about record investment both public and private in housing this year. Record investment, record prices, record low homeownership in the upcoming generations. Its hard not to feel bitter.

The Great Wobble is starting. It’s a wonder it took so long.
