The WEF has ranked disinformation as the number one global risk for two years in a row. Meanwhile platforms slash their moderation teams and the algorithms that drive engagement are the same algorithms that push users into radicalisation.
The effect is visible in Europe. The Parliament weakens as far-right groups gain more seats. More legislation is blocked. And mainstream media, from Euronews to national outlets, fuel anti-EU voices by playing the same engagement game on TikTok and YouTube.
The risk is obvious. Democracies erode, communities polarise, online hate spills into the street. I have experienced what it means when threats online turn into real attacks offline.
Europe has instruments – the DSA, fines, researcher access, cross-border initiatives. But so far they are too weak against the scale of the problem.
So I want to ask: what is the most persistent disinformation in your country. And what would actually work today to make truth more visible than lies.
Stop using AI moderation/algorithms and go back to regular old algorithms cca. pre 2020.
I watch one video on a subject, then my whole fyp is filled with just that, different from how it was before when the algorithms didn’t rewrite your whole history on the platform to overwhelmingly push that new thing. You don’t even have to watch that shit, as I think any measures to not see cancer on your fyp count as engagement to them. “Not interested”, “less like this”, report and block do not work anymore. My YouTube once fell into the right-wing pipeline and, once I realized it, I took all measures available to me to clean my fyp, and they worked great. Now I constantly get spammed with gambling ads on YT, have weird foreign videos and shitty AI videos under videos (they usually don’t appear on the main page, but mostly under the music videos I’m watching), but no matter how many times I use block, report or do not recommend, I can’t get rid of them, they return no matter what. It’s insane how many times the AI moderation saw nothing wrong with lots of the gambling ads I reported, considering you can report ads for gambling promotion reasons as per ToS.
Just ban social media and wait
Fine the shit out of those companies. Fine them fast, fine them often.
Only tangentially related but Reddit allowing people to hide their comment histories has made botting so much easier to hide.
It’s quite wild to notice the difference between now and then. I used to be on and off social media. Before, when I’d re-join without specifying interests, the algorithm would show me a variety of random content.
Nowadays if you do the same, most of the stuff you see immediately after set up is right wing -ism or -phobic content, and the recommended accounts to follow will be right wing podcasters, antivaxxers and all sorts of other grifters. Their rhetoric is now the default content and it gets pushed everywhere.
What we can do reflectively is offer social media alternatives running on decent algorithms instead of propaganda fever.
I think the EU should come together and invest money into a european made social media platform that can compete with X and meta and co.
I think it could work if i’d be a really a open platform like how x alows all kinds of speech and porn. Basically be open and allow almost everything to be able to compete but with a underlying alogrythm that has europes best interest in mind , unlike the current foreign privatly owned platforms. I doubt this will ever happen tho, if theres gonna be a european alternative , it would prob be a overmoderated over censored boring hell.
But i would absolutely ditch X or facebook for a good european alterantive. if its actually good and not overmoderated

The WEF is the cause of most of our problems since 2020. If you support WEF, you are on the wrong side of history.
