16 ottobre 1978. Viene eletto papa il cardinale Karol Wojtyła, arcivescovo di Cracovia. Prese il nome di Papa Giovanni Paolo II. Fu il primo papa non italiano dai tempi di Adriano VI nel XVI secolo, nonché il terzo papa più longevo della storia, dopo Pio IX e San Pietro.
