Sounds like a good reason to permanently deny consent tbh. Can’t allow a foreign power to bully a country on its own turf.

What I hate about authoritarian regimes is the foreign affairs reputation washing bullshit, which democratic regimes genuinely don’t get into.

“You’re going to use your embassy for spying.”

China: “Well I have never… not in all my days! We only know the meaning of the word ‘spy’ due to the ones the evil west sends our way! We are entirely benevolent and forthright and…. I really I can’t carry on this conversation… of all the things to accuse us of!”

Australia: “I mean, yeah, probably. Doesn’t everyone?”

When it’s a ‘hard target’, you only run intel ops against that country from the embassy and abroad.

If you’re talking ‘soft target’, then it becomes so much easier. This country is one of those…in other words, the embassy thing wouldn’t change a single thing.

Whatever L China offer Starmer will no doubt embrace it full-throatedly.

I agree. That said, they can steal alotnof data from plant in the basement.

Under planning law, all details must be provided. Planning can be withheld if not.

PMs a moock. If anything he should be kicking their government people out and banning it altogether. It’s like renting your spare bedroom to your stalker who plants cameras all over your house, when you find out he demands the keys to your bedroom door or he’ll stop paying rent.

Good. Expel their diplomats while we’re at it. Then force them to sell properties they own here and float companies they’ve take over on the London Stock Exchange.

Also, one can’t help laugh at the sheer gumption of their claims about honouring contracts. This is the country infamous for its policy of stealing as much intellectual property as possible

Someone please tell China that very few people appreciate, or like authoritarian bullies….

Well if that’s not a clear signal that we should just scrap the whole project then I don’t know what is

I’d rather be a politician that waved through an embassy than one that took literal bribes or caused Brexit because Russia told them to

    12. >On Thursday, Dominic [Cummings claimed he had been told “explicitly” by the security services](https://archive.is/o/qbNBQ/https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2025/10/16/cummings-security-services-china-spy-base-under-embassy/) that China was plotting to build a spy base under the new London embassy.

      >The former adviser to Boris Johnson said he was urged by both MI5 and MI6 to convince No 10 to “kibosh” the “dreadful idea”. US authorities have also raised concerns.

The Tories have claimed it is “likely” that the embassy will be used as a base for Chinese espionage and urged the Government to block it.

      So why didn’t they??

This should tell Starmer everything he needs to know about why China wants this complex. Drop it, force them into a semi-detached in Ealing, down the road from the North Korean embassy.

    14. IsOverParty on

Oh my god, then just deny!

An embassy of that size and in that location and within such a prestigious building should not be awarded to China. They’re not even an ally!
