For some reason Estonians started to consume more alcohol in 2004 when we joined EU. All locals started to flock into the liqueur stores next to Port of Tallinn.

Has a lot to do with a massive tourism increase for countries like Poland.

Consumption of everything has to decline, since the world is phasing out all finite natural resources

I Know, Finland dropped very high to very EU-average and still dropping (same is suici*e numbers). Finland have now same numbers Sweden always was. Denmark was always very liberal especially youth drinking, so that situation isn’t hardly good, but still stable. BUT what on earth happened Iceland and Norway? They drink more or what? And growing is more than Finland is improved situation? 😮
edit. i must add. That hardy isn’t any alcohol politic-situation, because every country i mentioned, is actually very different politics. Sweden is very strict alcohol policy, and is very long time same politic. Still number is little even growing. Denmark is always the same, stable situation. Estonia little hardened politics, but still you can get hard stuff at normal grocery store. Finland have actually liberate alcohol politics, many steps are made, and now we actually have 8% alcohol at stores. Before that was 5,5 and even before that was at decades 4,7. All the time, even if rules are liberated, numbers still dropping. We always see nightmare scenarios our news before those steps are made but afterwards are noticed, nothing bad happened. Still those countries where politics are very strict, numbers are growing? So think about that.

Interestingly, alcohol consumption in Russia is currently at an all-time low (about 8 liters per capita in 2024). The European average is about 9.2 liters per capita.

I always wonder how accurate these stats are, because people tend to under report when asked

Alcohol drunk by locals or alcohol consumed? Tourism might have a hand in all of this, no?

Is the reason for the 39% increase in Russia due to the reclassification of beer lower than (iirc) 8 or 12% or something like that to actually be alcohol sometime in the 2000s. Pretty sure before that it was deemed to be soft drinks.

Reversed colorscheme would have made more sense IMO
