Considering how much HH has tried to smear CC during this race, maybe she should shut the fuck up about “using the language of Nigel Farage”

      Catherine Connolly, probably:

      What Connolly said on Brexit:

      >We can judge and we can condemn the people that did not vote the way that the English Government, Irish Government or the EU wanted them to vote. We can remain in denial and we can continue to believe that the EU can continue as is without the UK and that our role is to be good European citizens and comply with the rules to hold back the tide or we can grow up and own up to the fact that this Government not only failed to see Brexit winning but took an active part in the project of fear that sought to scare the British electorate into remaining.

      […]

      >Deputy Micheál Martin said, “Brexit would be bad for Britain, bad for Ireland, bad for Europe and, as the IMF pointed out last week, bad for the world.” John Bruton utterly failed to recognise the significance of the referendum and of the crisis that a Brexit would create for the EU. Many of these same people and others repeatedly pointed out in the media that the Brexit side had no plan of action, which was a fair comment and a fair question. However nobody put the question as to what was the contingency plan of those who favoured remaining, including our own Government. Therefore, before and after the vote we continue to see one right way to vote and one right way to behave. It does not occur to the commentators, to the Irish Government, to the UK Government and, most important, to the EU itself that despite the projection of fear and total manipulation of same to force a desired result, the electorate was not fooled. The only foolish people are those of us who are still unable to digest and learn from the fact that more than 17 million people voted for a Brexit.

      >The EU project, led by an elite that is unaccountable to the people, is utterly deaf to what people in different countries, including Ireland, have been saying about the EU: its growing size and power, its overall control and the volume of legislation emanating from the EU, notwithstanding the constant bombardment from the establishment to remain. This should alert us and red bells should ring that something is seriously amiss with the EU itself.

I think terming this as language of Farage is a bit of a stretch.

Brilliant line in the Journal comments section:

“Connollys campaign is about why she should be the next President. Humphries campaign is about why Connolly should not be the next President.”

    5. pippers87 on

Connolly’s views on the EU are out of line with the majority of voters here but Connolly will have no say on anything EU related so it’s irrelevant to be honest.

Connolly represented banks during repossession cases, something which must have been hard for her…. It shows she can put personal views aside and do her job.

While I would not give Connolly a vote in a general election as I would disagree with too much of her stuff I will however vote for her come the presidential election as I reckon she is a decent person and she is not from Monaghan.

    6. Ashamed-End-2138 on

Bring on the election because I am sick of hearing about Heather Humphreys. She gets more unlikeable every day.

    7. hallon421 on

That’s rich coming from someone who has touched on far right strategies like alleging “far left” bad faith and falsehoods like Paul Murphy being Connolly’s campaign manager.

    8. Own-Pirate-8001 on

If she keeps going, I’m starting to think that Humphries might actually defame Connolly next.

    9. I genuinely don’t know how people aren’t embarrassed to support FG when they’re constantly coming out with pathetic shite like this. There’s plenty you could use to actually criticise Connolly but when you trot out brain dead lines like this no one should take you seriously.

    10. Nearby-Priority4934 on

She’s not wrong. Horseshoe theory in full effect, populists on both ends of the spectrum have a similar disconnection from reality.

    11. Screwqualia on

Lol – the journal is so pro-Connolly it uses the longer, clunkier “presidential rival” in the headline rather than her name.

    12. Tis_STUNNING_Outside on

      Is she genuinely being serious?

She’s like if Waterford Whispers came up with a FG presidential candidate.

      Like is this real?

    13. uiuuauiua on

I think not only has HH embarrassed herself but she’s actually damaged FG as a whole more than anything they could have done through government. She’s made them look even more incompetent and ridiculous than they could ever manage

    14. SEND-MARS-ROVER-PICS on

Alright, at this point I’m more interested in voting against Humphreys than for Connolly.

    15. _Are_WeThere_Yet_ on

Can we ask her Orange Order husband what he thinks of farage?

The organisation that protests pride parades might, maybe have more in common with farage than a cycling hippy leftist from the west of Ireland.

    16. BestMateFinchy on

As poorly as HH comes across, there’s no way I’d vote for a Putin/Assad/Xi shill like CC.

Know people by who they associate with. Daly, that blond clown, SF etc

      Probably sit this one out.

    17. brentspar on

How could anyone seriously consider voting for Humphreys at this stage. All she does is bad mouth Connolly.
Can you imagine her representing Ireland on an international stage.

    18. I would ask the FFG heads in here to just move on. Your arguments and smears are being wasted. Save your energy for the next election. Have a break.

    19. Desperation is setting in, expect this to increase over the next week with more pathetic rhetoric.

    20. RossaDeVereMcNally on

I I’m voting for Catherine Connolly because I want a green passport and bendy bananas.

    21. TheBacklogReviews on

So she’s running with the Ivan Yates “smear the bejaysus out of her” strategy after all huh

    22. Don’t forget FG supported the candidacy of someone who assaulted another man and was convicted for it in the last General Election.

      Keep reminding people

    23. shaddowedniches on

The greatest gift this campaign has given us is that Mary Lou is saying nothing.
The most surprising thing is that Mary Lou realised she should say nothing.

    24. shaddowedniches on

When HH tries to low-key smear CC, just ask her to say it in Irish.

    25. Such_Technician_501 on

I have a lot of issues with Catherine Connolly despite being broadly in line with her on 80% of things and I’m not particularly happy to vote for her. I’ve considered spoiling my vote. But Heather Humphreys is such a thundering cunt I have to vote against her. And that means voting for Connolly.

    26. Dry-Communication922 on

Still going with Ivan’s smear strategy so? Keep blueshirts and orange order out of Phoenix Park

    27. She has nothing to offer bar attacking and smearing her rival. A horrible, nasty piece of work. Pathetic too.
