“The second was an online petition opposing the removal of parking with 340 signatures, though some of these were from Australia, France, the UK, the Czech Republic, the US, New Zealand, and Spain. A third petition, expressing full support for the published scheme, had 500 signatures.”

Why are people not in Ireland signing petitions to oppose the removal of some parking on one city centre street? Bot farms, maybe? Very strange

All irrelevant then. It doesn’t matter what people not even living in the area have to say on parking.

Only the opinions of the people living in the area should be considered, shirley?

Surely those signatures from Australia, France, the UK, the Czech Republic, the US, New Zealand, and Spain are discounted, right?

It’s standard practice for part 8 planning. There has to be public consultation and anyone anywhere can make a submission. The designers are NOT obliged to change anything based on submissions. The idea is that if say locals think there needs to be more parking they can bring that up and the council can refine the plans if they think it’s an improvement or ignore it if they think it’s nimbyism. Planners aren’t influenced by nimbys despite what people think.
