I am sure the Fine Gael crowd will be quick to condemn Heather Humphreys for representing financial institutions and chasing struggling families for debts in a time of severe economic hardship.

Such obvious media bias and smear campaign against ~~Connolly~~ I mean Humphries

What an absolute clown if she didn’t think the CUs history was going to be investigated based on the shite herself and her party has been trying to sling.

“A credit union has a duty to look after the savings of those who deposit their money with the credit union. Unfortunately, in some cases, and always with the approval of the board of directors in the credit union, legal proceedings took place, but it was only as a matter of last resort,” she told reporters while canvassing in Gorey, Co Wexford.

“I can tell you that nobody lost their house when I worked in the credit union,” she said.

“I never evicted anybody from their house. Definitely not. And that is something the credit union has always tried to do, to work with people and give them a chance and try to allow them to get themselves back on track.”

That bats away this line of attack..

      > When asked about Fine Gael barrister who represented clients in other controversial cases, Humphreys said “barristers have a job to do”.

      > “The point I am making is, how can you stand up and give out and criticise and castigate banks and at the same time you’re working for them to repossess houses”.

      That’s specious reasoning.

Thankfully,we’re into the last few days of this fiasco.

Honestly think all candidates should fuck off, none of them are as prestigious as those who held the position before them.

    8. Has she tried the “money was just resting in the account” trick?

The media are the real winners in the past week or so.

This whole thing just needs to be over so we can go back to not thinking about the Presidency.

How are the political operators who are at the highest level of politics this incompetant.

Like politicising the way Barristers are selected to represent defendants in Court is bad enough, but to do it in such a way that it leaves you open to such obvious counter-attacks is astounding.

God I love the presidential elections, for such an inconsequential position it shakes things up every time.

Jesus, this fucking election is bringing out the worst of us. Talk about airing your dirty laundry in public? What is going on? This is pure shite lads. We can’t have this every few years.

Why is repossession being presented as if it’s some kind of scandal? Everyone who gets a mortgage signs off on contract which clearly states the terms. Irish banks are incredibly lenient so you really have to be taking the piss before they’ll look to repossess.

    13. Key-Lie-364 on

Yeah let’s let credit unions go bust that’s in everybody’s interests 🙄

    14. DrJimbot on

These are both bullshit. What is the problem with taking legal recourse to people who default on loans? Every case of house repossession I have seen described is an absolute pisstake by the people refusing to make any effort to repay.

    15. I’m not familiar with how credit unions operate but I imagine it’s a possibility for financial institutions, like basically any business or organisation in Ireland, to take debtors to court to try and recover funds legally owed to them.

This would be another nothing-burger of a story if it didn’t show the double standard of FG criticising Connolly for acting in repossession matters.

I just don’t understand why the HH campaign has focused on trying to attack CC on her strengths throughout this campaign. You’re not going to beat CC on her lefty credentials no matter how hard you try, nor on her women’s rights/feminist credentials, disability advocacy, support for Palestine, etc.

    17. Seankps4 on

Surely someone should bring up the fact that barristers have to work independently on cases they work on, even if they disagree with their client. Similarly, the president is obliged to sign legislation as long as its constitutional even if they disagree with it. The trait of impartiality and doing the job you have been trusted to do is vital to the role, Catherine has shown that she is capable of doing that while Humphreys has shown that she is incapable of doing that
