L’uomo che ha sparato al primo ministro slovacco è stato incarcerato per 21 anni

A pensioner who shot and wounded [the prime minister of Slovakia](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/05/15/slovakia-prime-minister-robert-fico-shot/) last year has been sentenced to 21 years in a maximum-security prison.

Juraj Cintula, a 72-year-old writer and poet, shot Robert Fico five times at close range [as he walked among crowds](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/05/17/how-close-protection-officers-guard-politicians-robert-fico/) of supporters in the town of Handlová in May 2024.

The 61-year-old prime minister [was hit by four bullets](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/06/05/slovakia-pm-says-he-forgives-his-shooter-video-fico/), suffering injuries to his abdomen, hip, hand and foot. He underwent hours of surgery and has largely recovered, returning to work two months after he was shot.

Cintula said [he shot Mr Fico](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/05/16/slovakian-prime-minister-robert-fico-shot-condition/) because he disagreed with his policies, including his decision to [end military aid for Ukraine](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/12/23/slovakia-talks-putin-ukraine-cut-russia-gas-supply/) and his scrapping of a special prosecution office that fought corruption.

In court, Cintula described the attack as a “scream against fear that is paralysing the society” but said he was relieved Mr Fico had not died.

“I decided to harm the health of the prime minister, but I had no intention to kill anyone,” he said.

Cintula was found guilty of terrorism charges after a trial that started in July in a criminal court in the city of Banská Bystrica, in central Slovakia.
