I’ve heard from catholics that witch trials were mostly a thing in protestant countries. I even believed that… but on this map there a lot of red dots in catholic ~~Austria~~ and southern Germany. What was happening there?

And I did not expect that there will be so little dots for Spanish Inquisition.

Edit: Turns out that’s not Austria, that’s just Bavaria.

Map is flawed Stockholm had witch trials which source obviously missed.

60% of witch burnings in Denmark happened in just 8 years. 1617-1625

Yep. We had a power hungry King directing hatred which manifested in the population. With the Kings blessings and laws against witchcraft the judicial system failed its duty to find the truth. Or rather once accused there was little defense possible.

    4. 550 years is an incredibly long time frame. In 1300, there were no mechanical clocks, in 1850 trains were running through the United States of America.

I would love to also see a graph how many witch trials happened in each century and how many ended in execution.

A 500 years span seems pretty useless unless it’s to increase the perceived amount of trials.

Then again perhaps the full paper also has better breakdowns

This seems to be incomplete, there were several hundreds of victims of witch trials in northeastern Czechia during the 17th century. A great movie Witchhammer (1970) by Otakar Vávra is based on this.

I would love to see this color coded for time.
At first glance it looks a bit like a religious map of Europe after the reformation.

It seems as if the catholic countries were more likely to have witch trials than the Protestant ones, barring Holland and Geneva. So from this map you might infer that Catholics and Calvinists really liked to burn witches.

Then again, these trials might have all taken place before the reformation.

Wtf?! No Croatia on this map?

Fun fact: One of the last witch trials in Europe was supposed to be conducted in Croatia in 18th century, in 1757. Empress Maria Theresa intervened and saved the poor woman. Her name was Magda Logomer Herucina, and she was accused of witchcraft.

    11. A lot are missing in Denmark, there were around 1000 people killed

Is there the same map updated Anno 2025? Holland would still be a hot spot. Seems all my neighbours are witches.

    15. Why does it cut off Spain? Are you trying to hide the Spanish Inquisition?

      Witchcraft accusation:

My neighbor is a Protestant Christian, he has a black cat and his cows don’t get sick.

    17. People abused it because they didn’t like what that one neighbor did or how that neighbor had a better life than them. It was complete bullshit. Murder.
