      A pre-match controversy over a flag recalling the World War II-era massacre of Poles by Ukrainian nationalists overshadowed Thursday’s Europa Conference League game between Poland’s Legia Warsaw and Ukraine’s Shakhtar Donetsk.

      Shakhtar, forced by the war in Ukraine to host its European fixtures in Poland, reportedly refused to allow Legia fans to display the flag, prompting Legia supporters to threaten a boycott.

      “In a Polish stadium, the head of security for Shakhtar Donetsk, a Ukrainian, doesn’t want to allow this [‘Volhynia We Remember’] flag,” a group responsible for Legia’s fan choreography wrote on social media.

      “It’s scandalous. Without that flag, we’re not going in. It’s obvious,” the group added.

      As it should have been banned. What does Bandera have to do with Shakhtar Donetsk? He has never been east of the Dnieper. This is just incitement of hatred on the basis of nationality.
