There seems hardly enough outrage to go around in France nowadays, between the museum thefts, workers’ protests and constantly collapsing government.

      >China’s fast fashion mega-seller Shein is opening its first permanent Paris boutique in the iconic Bazar de l’Hotel de Ville department store. Parisian purists say the move betrays the artistry and craftsmanship of France’s tradition of couture. Some are boycotting the store and others have even started a petition in opposition of Shein’s Paris arrival.

That’s the whole linked article, I shit you not. That’s it.

Even in the age of AI, that must be the epitome of laziness? Like WTF?

A German saying comes to mind, with a dad joke thrown into the mix: “Mehr S(c)hein als Sein.”

To give more context, BHV is part of what is called the “Grands Magasins”, which is kind of a collective prestige brand for some big name stores in Paris, many of them being 100 to 150 years old.

The main issue here isn’t cultural, it’s pure marketing. The market segment targeted by the Grands Magasin are well off-to-rich people, most often left-leaning and environmentally conscious.

So putting in their store stuff from a fast fashion, low quality producer suspected to use Uyghur slave labor is moronic for basic marketing reasons. It’s really not rocket science.

Try it in a shop for rich people in Spain, Germany, Italy, Japan … and you’ll have similar reactions with just some adjustments based on the culture.
