Even though I’m not a fan of Connolly’s worldview, I’m glad that the Irish democracy is strong and the defeated candidate conceded gracefully. That’s how it should be in all democracies.

      Congrats Ireland.

    2. I don’t believe either candiate was a good call. Even the one I’d voted for, I had to hold my nose, being on the opposite end of a few of my principals.

I’ve read a few reports this morning, there were more spoiled votes counted than for Connaly in a few consituencies. Including one with a message that thanked the counters for thier hard work.

A notable moment for Irish politics. Hoping for positive progress ahead.

… at least I agree with her on abortion and the war in Gaza

    5. A deranged tankie elected as President. If this is the will of the Irish democracy, then I hope no country in Europe takes them seriously when it comes to foreign policy. Except of course Hungary and Slovakia, tankies naturally enjoy each others success.

And yes I know this is primarily a ceremonial role, but it indicates Irish willingness to elect tankies who would eagerly undermine European security.

The women supported Mick Wallace and Claire Daly known Russian mouthpieces on the EU election. Shame than she think she can represent Ireland on anything.

None of the three on the ballot paper were good enough in my opinion and a lot of the the discourse around them shows problematic attitude to Irish life

She’s an anti-NATO tankie, but at least it’s only a ceremonial role. She has no real power.

A big factor in her win is the government parties failing to field decent candidates.

    9. This changes everything (I know nothing about Irish politics)

The Irish president is ceremonial. I wonder why there is even direct vote. In Italy or Greece where the president has similar ceremonial powers there are no direct public elections
