Great, can’t wait for her to embarrass us in Europe. Her first trip abroad should be a tour of all the EU countries that share a border with Russia.

Must be weird for Heather nodding and smiling as Catherine and Mícheál talk about her in Irish, just assuming they’re being nice (which they both were)

She spoke well. I wasn’t trilled about any potential candidates at any points during the process but I do believe she has potential. She is well spoken, outspoken and does share a lot of the views of the majority of the population. I feel I’ve been quite lucky in every president so far during my lifetime so I hope she lives up to the expectations some people have put on her.

Remind me in 5 years when everybody’s complaining about her comments on the Russian invasion of the EU

I hope they won’t be disappointed; some younger voters seem to be under the impression she can do things that are not within the President’s remit.

Voted for her reluctantly, hope she proves the reluctance rather than the vote wrong.
Glad we don’t have to do this again for at least 7 years.

Congratulations President Connolly! A major win for the Irish left, I hope the next six years go well.

Glad she had a resounding success. I was worried as half the reddit comments seemed afraid of her outspoken (and correct) opinions. Important to have someone with conviction.

Why are people so salty about spoiled votes when their candidate won by historic margins. Just grow up and enjoy the win.

Largest ever vote share and raw vote for a winning Uachtarán 🇮🇪

It’s an interesting dynamic how the main parties were doing their best to smear CC up until yesterday and then once elected everyone cuddles up. Politics is so two-faced. You really do need to have a thick skin.

Delighted for her, what a historic win! 👏
She spoke so eloquently, was lovely to see & hear.

Declan Ganley and Maria Steen are only raging.

Do the weighted maths to normalise for the fact that this is an outlier election with two candidates compared to the average of six over the last three elections, and her first pref drops to about 46%.
The reason for doing that calculation is that fewer candidates naturally inflate first pref votes, so you need to do that for historical comparisons.
Still a comprehensive win and trounced FFG mind you.

Kinda funny that the Labour linked TD from Galway West who is elected at 68 is replacing the Labour linked TD from Galway West who was elected at 70.
Especially given their personal history.

Good. Humphries was a sad spiteful candidate who came across as utterly spoilt. Good riddance

Isn’t largest number of votes just a “population goes up” statistic
fair play to her

Lovely speech as gaeilge and as béarla.
So the spoiled votes are still significant but the narrative that it was the main reason she won is bollocks
