Thanks to this government coming in and cutting jobs

Aside from the obvious “what the hell” – is there no coordination between health boards, the RCN, and universities on training places?
I know in Australia they limit the amount of university places for nursing and medicine to ensure graduates all get jobs; I figured this was standard practice worldwide.

It’s the same for all healthcare professionals. It’s estimated around a half of doctors are unemployed once finishing the foundation programme (first 2 years of employment). Same for nurses physios, radiographers etc. They paid to train us but don’t want to employ us.

Just totally unacceptable. Nurses have been given the utter shaft over the last ten years – removal of training bursaries and saddled with a load of student debt that manifests itself as an effective pay cut and now no jobs when you qualify – in an NHS that has a huge vacancy rate!

Does this mean we have frozen visas for overseas nurses in the UK too?

I don’t see why this is a bad thing. Have them interview and compete like any other job and only hire the best.

How can the government continue to train more doctors and nurses while simultaneously not expand the number of jobs available…

Are we talking about the same country that recruited 50k nurses from Asia and Africa post Covid ? People who run these institutions should be held accountable for malpractice and even corruption! Completely clueless about the country they live in . NMC, NHS and the universities

They recruit from abroad so why bother with home grown especially when they won’t strike as they are happy with the pay and working conditions. They also only join the union for when they get into issues but don’t vote or part take in the union which is one of the reasons why the unions are so weak.

Remember when nurses didn’t even have to go to uni? What’s happened to the world

So from the article it’s not that there are no jobs it’s just that there are no nursing roles in that area (Swansea), I get that it’s not ideal but moving for work after graduating is a fairly normal experience.

Yeah, AHPs and Medical staff are struggling too.
