As far as I’m concerned, we draw a dotted line around a bit of land and say “China, you can have an embassy here”. From that moment on, British law doesn’t apply inside the dotted line – which means planning regulations also don’t apply – which means china is free to build whatever they like.
The fact they volunteered to show us the plans to review and to make it in keeping with the area is a bonus – but they morally and legally didn’t have to.
I don’t really understand the furore about this embassy, it’s not like China doesn’t already have one and that every country in the world don’t already use their embassies for espionage anyway.
It’s naive to think this will have any impact at all.
