TIL the word curfew is named after an item
That’s pretty smart. As a mildly related anecdote, when I was young I once jumped over a bonfire which was extinguished for more than 30 hours, of course one of my legs ended up right in the middle, and despite wearing sneakers I got seriously burnt. That was some kind of lesson I guess.
or in other words, why cigarettes were invented
It’s from a temporary exhibition at Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, called Thuis in de 17e eeuw (At home in the 17th century). I really recommend it if you’re visiting Rijksmuseum. The audiotour in English is narrated by Helena Bonham Carter, and it’s delightful.
