“Austria’s Chancellor Christian Stocker has firmly rejected any suggestion of banning Israel from the Eurovision Song Contest as his country prepares to host the next edition of the competition in 2026.

“I would consider it a fatal mistake to exclude Israel,” Stocker was quoted as saying in an interview with German news agency dpa published on Sunday, Austria’s National Day.

“Based on our history alone, I would never be in favour of that,” he added, in reference to Austria’s shared responsibility for crimes committed during the Holocaust in World War Two.

Eurovision, which stresses its political neutrality, has faced controversy linked to Israel’s military campaign in Gaza in response to the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led attacks on Israel.

The public broadcasters of some European countries, including Spain, Ireland and the Netherlands have pledged to withdraw if Israel takes part in the contest to be held in Vienna next May.

Eurovision Song Contest organisers this month scrapped a planned November meeting to vote on Israel’s participation, and are now due to look at it in December.” – Reuters

Lol, talk about overreaction! 😂 Austria’s not banning Eurovision, they’re just fed up with the politics. T

Austria and Germany don’t support removing Israel from Eurovision.

In other news, water is wet.

I really hope Spain, Ireland and the Netherlands stick to their pledge. And hopefully other countries join too. It’s infuriating how a country that isn’t even in Europe causes so much division in what should be a fun contest every single year.

Especially after the clearly rigged televote of last year it should be obvious that Israel shouldn’t be allowed to participate again.

      >“Based on our history alone”

Wild that we all have to be captive to the crimes of Germans’ and Austrians’ grandparents

We helped commit a genocide 80 years ago, so now we should help commit a genocide to make up for it. Sounds reasonable…

If Israel is allowed in, why not Russia??

I hate to put it on the table like that, but they’re literally both committing the same atrocities. Why the double standards?

Oh, are they “making up for it” by facilitating another genocide? If that’s the case, the only “eye for an eye” justice would be if Israel was bombing Germany and Austria.

First of all, isn’t that up to EBU as a whole?

Second of all, if that’s the case prepare to withdrawal of at least 6 countries, one being one of the big 5. Oh, also the contest will once again be a shitstorm and Israelis will once again cheat the televote to turn and say “mAyBe eUrOPe iSn’t ThAT AnTi-iSrAel, gET OuT Of ThE iNtErNet”.

By now ESC 2026 will be won by Israel. If countries are boycotting they don’t even have to get like 400 points or so..
Maybe ESC 2028 will be a normal one?
