The big thing this article fails to mention is that the current world order now requires the use of troops to maintain it and that no country wants to go to war.
And also, I am confused by the conclusion.
>Furthermore, it would create a dangerous schism between the US and Europe —exactly what Putin has been aiming for. Russian terms would extend to the very fabric of the international order, as authoritarian regimes might see an opportunity to redraw internationally recognized borders, knowing that the enforcement of international law has become selective and negotiable.
>If the US chooses pragmatism over principle, it may find itself presiding over the unraveling of a system it spent decades constructing. The decision on the fate of Ukraine could shift the world toward a multipolar landscape, where China and Russia [dictate](https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/putin-greets-chinas-xi-kremlin-2025-05-08/) global norms on their own terms.
“Might makes right’ has always been the way of the world. Where the strong dictate their will over the weak.
Before the US is able to impose order using both financial and military means but now it can’t. Countries that benefit from decades of peace now becomes too powerful for the US to control.
And somehow because of that, its allies in Europe and Asia will turn away from the US? Turn away to who?

It’s really hard for me to believe the levels of hypocrisy required to not realise that the so called protector of the rule based order and sovereignty of states, the USA basically toppled governments and installed friendly ones either by invasion or other means almost at will since the end of the Second World War .
They are in the process of doing just that in Venezuela right now .
Sure it’s not by officially annexing but by creating client states or even worse destabilising whole regions with consequences all over the world because of their cowboy conquests for resources.
This is a big geopolitical contest and on whatever side you on , I really don’t understand the intellectual gymnastics required to maintain such a hypothetical believe system .
They also do not do it in a smart way, they either back some radical groups which later bites the whole world in the ass or try to install inept governments and when it does not work they just leave and a mess remains
