Okay, so what’s the problem here? Is this a puff piece?

Yes Lucy Powell should just give up her flat to the taxpayer (who pays to house the MPs). That’s how it works, right? When Farage becomes PM, he’s expected to give up his millions to the nearest food bank, right?

I… don’t really see the problem with this? The taxpayer would presumably be paying the expenses of this MP no matter who they were renting from…

      > Figures obtained by The Daily Mail reveal that a string of MPs are continuing to rent out properties to each other despite the parliamentary pay watchdog promising to review the practice more than a decade ago.

Hey Telegraph, why don’t you focus on that list instead?

I remember when this was a huge scandal back in 2009.

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom_parliamentary_expenses_scandal

A large part of that scandal was MPs claiming for a second home and it turning out they already owned it under a trust, or were renting it from another MP.

I wonder why the Tories did absolutely nothing about this for 14 years, and it’s only now that the law is going to be changed.

      > An Ipsa spokesman said: “Last year, we consulted on changes to the scheme to address public concern about MPs who owned property in London renting it out to other MPs whilst also claiming accommodation funding from Ipsa.

      > “As a result of that consultation, from April 1 2025 no new arrangements are allowed.

      > “As is common in other regulated sectors, Ipsa is taking a proportionate approach where existing arrangements are not using Ipsa funds and provide value for money for taxpayers.”

Yet again, corruption like this is ignored until Labour get in and have to close the loopholes.

If you need somewhere to stay while in the capital doing one half of your job, when your constituency is on the other side of the country, it’s not that unreasonable.

Hmrc allows you to expense the cost of hotels/rent if your job requires you to be away from where you usually live. There are tight regulations it fine, whatever.

They don’t let you expense (and so pay no tax on) money from your company to buy a place for the same purpose. That would be taxable income.

Doing a swap with your colleague like this, where you’re circumventing the rule is borderline tax fraud and would almost certainly be caught in some of the new “anti avoidance” measures.

Unless you are above the law and hmrc let you expense anything and pay no tax because you’re above the law…

I am actually nicely surprised at how many people on Reddit have realised this is a 100% non-story.

      Slow news day Telegraph?

If that’s all they’ve found on Powell then that’s a good sign because we know the Mail is desperate to undermine the government at every opportunity.

Headline suggests two MPs own a property in London and rent it out to each other and get paid by taxpayers for that rent

Instead what’s happening is one MP owns the property and rents part of it to another MP

This is good because the second MP has to only pay for part of the flat and not whole of it. As long as rent is within market rate, this is great

I didn’t know anything about Lucy Powell but if this is the first slander Telegraph could print, then she is good

Genuinely think these people just need to spend some time in jail.

Absolute non-story by the compliant right-wing media looking for anything they can find.
