Government: We think we should raise taxes to try to reduce gambling and raise extra revenue.
Gambling companies: If you do that, we’ll close the betting shops
Ummm, good argument guys 🤔

..and after picking up their VIP tickets to the sports match of their choice the incredulity waned and the MPs saw how pertinent the point was…

Remember many MPs accept gifts and bribes from the gambling industry.
We’re apparently OK with this scumbag industry and open corruption from our politicians which explains why this scumbag industry continues to grow and blight nearly every street while spamming us constantly with ads designed to encourage what is widely recognised as harmful behaviour.
Gambling has to exist legally (or it just moves underground) but it sure as fuck should not be allowed to operate and advertise as it currently does.

Never forget Tom Watson went straight into a job at Paddy Power after doing everything he could to stop Labour getting elected.

In fairness, while there is a lot of evidence that gambling causes extensive harm in many fields, social harm is one of the few areas where the evidence backing is more dubious. The 2023 study by the government came to the conclusion that “there is very little evidence” rather than an actual conclusion of harm or no harm.
Still, it’s the equivalent of pointing at something on fire and saying that at least it’s not frozen. It’s at best a deflection and at worst disingenuous.

I would be in favour of banning gambling adverts and sponsorship, as happened with tobacco, and probably also should happen with alcohol.

Well, lobbyist has an interesting mental picture about what society is and what ills are. So in the framework, yeah, he concludes this, no surprises…

Yeah, No.
And I say this from managing virtual racing betting content across multiple regions in China whilst working under contract for the Chinese finance ministry.
There’s clearly reason why companies open betting shops in streets that are in working class areas. It’s a tried and tested model and let’s not even get into the legislation that tries to control FOBT’s.

PSA for anyone that isn’t aware, you can turn off gambling ads for yourself on all Google platforms (including youtube) [here](https://support.google.com/My-Ad-Center-Help/answer/12155260?hl=en).
Save yourself the annoying advert and make them less profitable for Google to run gambling ads reducing their willingness to enter into those deals.
I support increased taxes on the gambleing indusrty. In fact betting shops and casinos should have their bisiness rates increased as well.
