Well lets not forget that the main reason for the Brexit referendum was Cameron trying to hold the Tory party together. Expect what happened was the moderates were kicked out by Boris, the total loonies are going to Reform, leaving just the loonies.

      *The right-wing

Clearly a lot of people are pretending or deluding themselves that they’ve gotten remotely close to doing nothing wrong about the state of the UK as they jump ships.

    3. The underlying problem I have with pretty much every ‘moderate’ Tory who comes out with stuff like this, see Major, Rory Stewart, Osborne, May, Warsi, Soubry, whoever, is that they never deal with their own complicity in everything.

The seed of the Tories current problems lie in the 2010 election promise to cut net migration down to the tens of thousands. That was the primary bit of political red meat that was thrown to voters who thought migration was too high. It won over millions of voters who wanted to see levels come down, and voted Tory as a result.

It was a lie. It was always a lie. The Tories then never had any intention of even trying to deliver it. They didn’t even pretend to for half a decade, they just hid behind the EU.

That lie was what got them elected. It got them power and influence. That lie is why they became Ministers. Why they got the pensions.

The Tory party is literally nothing without the promise to cut migration. They last won election on a non-less than 100,000 mandate in 1992, when it would have been redundant as the numbers were around 60k.

I would go as far as saying I think the net-migration commitment is the most popular bit of their entire manifesto. Get rid of it, and there is basically nothing left.

The Tory moderates are basically like a gangsters wife. They pretend not to know what the source of their electoral success is, they pretend to be all prim and proper, and don’t ask any questions about all the shovels that go missing.

I do hope the man who signed the Maastricht treaty is including himself in that sorry lot

      Reform…are the tories though.
They have more Tories in the party than in the tory party. They are rebranding after destroying their name.
They even keep trying to get rid of the human rights act like the Tories have been trying to do since pre 1994.

The right has always been like this John.

They were just biding their time while playing a centre right LARP in the late 90s and through the 00s. 2010 to 2024 was just a slow boiling the frog march more and more rightwards.

If moderate tories exist, they’re a tiny minority.

Major was a one-pump chump and should probably just enjoy his retirement in silence – this sort of nonsense doesn’t help anyone.

    8. Tories, Labour, Neoliberalism, xenophobia and racism on every newspaper front-page for 40 years, Putin,l & russian disinformation psyops and twitter botfarms…the list goes on

    9. It’s remarkable how random Tory leaders are on migration. Major is apparently a moderate but net migration was 30k a year under his tenure, that is basically a Reform policy today. Theresa May was a moderate and is the only Tory leader for 30 years who has cut migration, from 300k to 200k. Boris was supposed to be a hard liner but increased it from 200k to 900k. Sunak was a moderate but introduced rules that cut migration after he left office. It’s like these people choose their policies at random and see no connection between their public persona and their actions.

What a cunt, Major started it himself by signing up to the Maastricht treaty without consulting the population, causing a split in the Conservative party that festered until it popped with the EU membership referendum.

    11. RoyaleWCheese_OK on

Its because the Tories somehow managed to be both incompetent and not Conservative at the same time for the last 15 years.

Pushed many of their normal voters to Reform because .. what other option do they have?

    12. Parking-Tip1685 on

John Major is an expert in Tories losing support. Major led the Tories to give Blair a 179 seat majority, even bigger than the current majority.

I wish major and hesltine would shuffle off this mortal coil

Camo offered a referendum promise as election bait and the electorate bit down on it wholeheartedly.

“Buyer beware. I told you my compound would take you places. I never said they were places you wanted to go!”
