I walked past that scene last year – that’s awful that it has happened again in the same place
I watched an elderly lady walk out and get hit by a skip truck on merrion square 3 weeks ago. Thankfully the skip driver was watching and slammed on the brakes and the truck literally stopped as it made contact and she was sent flying. The reason it happened was because she was watching the traffic coming from the other direction and just stepped out onto the road. Everyday I take the same road and it happens to me. I always beep my horn as I proceed if there is anyone standing at the junction.
It’s such a wide street that doesn’t lend itself to being a city centre street in such a busy and heavily pedestrianised area.
So sad, may they RIP.
Did the lorry run the lights or something, it’s an area of Dublin I always use the pedestrian lights for. Wide massive road with constant traffic of cars, commercial vehicles and bikes
Yeha I’ve seen it before when some idiot deliveroo cyclist went through the lights going down the hill and clipped someone walking the green man light. People just don’t bother with rules of the road anymore.
Dangerous and unsafe pedestrian movement activities in the city centre play a large part in these incidences every year.
Awful news 😢 R.I.P ❤️
I remember a teenager was hit in that spot about 10 years or so ago & her leg had to be amputated. It was early in the morning as well.
The footpaths are far too narrow and the council are a bollix because these roads should have been narrowed decades ago but they use the College Green Plaza as an excuse not to do anything in the interim despite them being far too incompetent to actually deliver it.
Very sad news 😔
While it’s reported that it happened at 1:45am, that pedestrian crossing on George St and Dame St feels incredibly dangerous even during the day.
There are huge amounts of pedestrians crowded into very small areas of pavement outside Gay Spar, the Mercantile, and Centra waiting to cross. It can be so crowded that even if you’re not crossing, it be difficult to pass because of the amount of people.
Then there are the busses turning off Dame St onto George St and have to take a very tight corner. If you’re waiting on the crowded corner by the Mercantile, those buses pass by incredibly close to where you are standing.
Even after the light changes, there will be Deliveroo drivers and people on scooters who fly through the crossing going down Dame St and almost hitting people.
I nearly got run over, the other week. It was so scary. My friend and I was crossing the road at a popular place for pedestrians. I was over half way over the road when a car came out of the junction to our left. I had to hit the bonnet with my hand. The car was so big, I’m only a small woman 5.2. The driver was small to, I don’t think she could see me at all. Other cars where beeping her. Then she rolled down the window and started shouting at me like it was my fault. The road was clear when we started to cross. I was very shook up. The car was just so big I would have gone straight under. People need to think of pedestrians when getting these suv cars. Also think if they gave the visibility they need.
That stretch of road is chaotic – between the alleys and vehicles loading and unloading this will happen again.
That said, no idea what it looks like at that time of night.
Dame street is so wide for no reason. It needs to be more friendly for pedestrians and cyclists. I always feel unsafe even crossing the road there
Is it a 30 kph zone? If not, it’s criminal.
